On October 20th we celebrate the anniversary of the day when the Siri Guru Granth Sahib was declared the Guru of the Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh. The Siri Guru Granth Sahib is this living Guru, the Shabad Guru of the Sikhs.
Yesterday (Sunday) on a beautiful fall morning the Sikh community in Espanola, New Mexico celebrated this occasion. We started with a wonderful "feast" of a breakfast made by many sevadhars over at the "Ranch" pool house. After everyone filled up with yummy food and tea the Siri Guru Granth Sahib arrived by car and we had a procession to the Gurudwara. All the kids sat in a trailer in the back of a truck along with some musicians playing kirtan as we drove through the street. Some of the youth played Gatka with each other and shouted Jaikaras. The Panj Piaray were in front of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib along with the rest of the Sangat chanting together.
I’ve been sick on and off the past week so wasn’t full energy, but I was able to take some pictures and record some video of the day.
The above video shows some of the Nagar Kirtan as well as Kirtan with Chardikala Jatha & Hari Bhajan Kaur. Hopefully it will give you a bit more active glimpse of the Sangat here in Espanola. This is a video of various clips that I recorded on my new camera. I’m still getting used to recording video on a dSLR camera so there some parts that are not in full focus or exposure issues.
Love the pics of Princess Charanjeet ~ absolutely adorable!
Haha…I know. Girls are so particular about their clothes. Charanjeet and all the other girls always want to dress up as princesses. I guess they deep down know they are Khalsa princesses. I thought it was cute how she wanted to wear her plastic princess crown to Gurdwara. I wasn't so sure about it….but let it go. Reminds me of a nice blog post by another Sikh girl expressing her evolution to "becoming a princess" http://www.sikhnet.com/news/becoming-princess
Wonderful to watch!
