Guru Ram Das Ji’s Birthday Kirtan

This is a special time of year as we come close to the Birthday of Guru Ram Das Ji. One of the nice parts about this time of year in our community is the coming together as a Sangat in a personal way. Starting about 11 days before Guru Ram Das ji’s birthday a different family hosts kirtan and serves food at their home. So every day the sangat converges on someone’s home and we all pack in and sit together, do Rehiras and then sing the shabad "Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru" for 31 minutes.

At the end of kirtan the host tells a story about Guru Ram Das or how the Guru impacted their life in some way. It’s so cozy, sweet and nice to get together in this way (not to mention FREE food…! Hahaha… just kidding…though I know the bachelors out there are loving it).

Last night was the second night of kirtan which was hosted by our friends Guru Sadhana Kaur and Hari Mander Singh with Kirtan by Sadasat Simran Singh, Harimander Jot Singh and Ajai Singh. About nine more cozy nights like this still to come!

On Saturday Oct 9th the community celebrates Guru Ram Das’s Birthday in the Amrit Vela time. Starting at 4am and in 30 minute slots different musicians play the Shabad "Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru" and this continues for 2.5 hours. On this morning the Gurdwara is packed solid with people and beautifully lit up with lights. The energy is high as everyone sings together in praise of the fourth light of Nanak (Guru Ram Das).    Waheguru ji,
   It's a polite request that the word "birth"day should not be used with Gurus…because they are not into the cycle of birth and death.
   The ideal word (that I know) is "Prakash Utsav" which means the enlightening day..when the Guru enlightened on this earth for us…

   Hope you take my suggestion positively…

   This organization of websites leave me asking what is the special significance of Guru Ram Das? Please email me back and explain it to me, why some Sikh are considereing Guru Ram Das over the other 9 Gurus. I hope you do not feel offended.
