Happy New Year (It’s Still New)

My wife Arjan Kaur sent an email out a few days ago to some friends and family and thought it was inspirational so wanted to share with you. (I edited it down a bit to take out some personal stuff)

Happy 2009 to all of you!  I hope you all had a fantastic 2008 and are revving up for another super year.  In my commitment to the environment (and my budget), I’ve decided to do a group email.

It’s been an interesting year of growth for all of us here.  What that did for us was to just re-evaluate what is important to us in our lives and how to ‘do with less’ and really decide what was most important in our lives. What is important to us is: our kid’s education, being together as a family, laughing, a spiritual practice, being able to eat together every night, being relaxed (as much as that is possible with 2 little kids), living a few minutes away minutes from work, our health and sleep.

So, we started the process of living simply for ourselves, for the environment, our family, and the planet.  I’m learning to really appreciate and to be grateful for feeling joyful when I wake up in the morning, to have a peaceful night’s sleep, to be able to laugh (and cry) with my kids, to love my job, to be able to breathe fresh air and to drink clean water, to have wonderful family and friends, to see beauty in the world, and to get a little skiing in here and there.

With all of the changes the planet is going through, we all have choices about how we are going to respond to these upheavals (and they will be major for some people).  Realizing how, in America, we forget what is really the bottom line, meaning, what we are doing here, why we get up each day and for whom.  It’s not how much stuff we have and how fancy our car, etc.  It’s how we feel about ourselves each day, do we connect with the people that we love and tell them how much we appreciate them, do we connect with our inner selves.  This, as Oprah says, I have found to be my bottom line.  This is what I know to be true.

So, I want to let all of you know how much I love you, how much I appreciate you in our lives.  You make us who we are, and, even though I don’t get to connect with each of you regularly, I think about all of you often.  I send lots of love and blessings to all of you, and I wish all of you the greatest prosperity in all aspects of your lives.

I will also send all of you off to the New Year with this:

  1. If every household in America changed out their lightbulbs with those flurescent bulbs, it would be the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road (except, that I found out that they contain Mercury and I haven’t figured out to do with that)
  2. Take your own bags back the the stores.  I have been doing this for about 8 years and figure that I’ve saved about 5,000 plastic bags
  3. Turmeric can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and can also help with joint inflammation
  4. Every happy thought, every thought of gratitude, every kind work you think is sent out to the planet and can actually change consciousness (if you doubt this, look up "Hidden Messages in Water")
  5. On that note, smile at everyone and see what happens

Many blessings to all of you, Arjan and Family

Waheguru…. Indeed, it is wonderful to ‘put forward’ any inspiring or thought provoking messages. Love is the game we all want to play, but don’t realise it takes practice everyday.

Everyone should get down to the task of emailing something to people so that they too can take action

Thanks for your uplifting insights, Arjan.  Really all of us need to assess what are the most important things in our life and are we giving enough attention to it in terms of time, energy and money.
