The Human Powered Ferris Wheel

Back in the early 80’s when I was in school in Mussoorie, India (at GNFC school) we used to have "town leaves" and you could ride on this farris wheel which was powered by a guy in the middle running on the spokes. I remember hearing Hindi/disco music like "I am a disco dancer….jandagee mera gana…".

  1. That song is from the Bollywood movie “Disco Dancer”, starring Mithun Chakarvarty…. Every rickshaw puller used to hang the transistor radio on their rickshaw and play that song full blast… hahaha…

  2. Puja says:

oh my God, …..i m a disco dancer….haha !!! i was really little when that song/movie came out, i can still recall the actor dancing on the stage and singing, i was crazy about it back then. haha !!

  3. I vaguely remember going to the rollerskating rink (just down the street from this farris wheel) and they used to play all kinds of funny 80s Hindi music. Lot’s of disco influence back then.

The worst though is when you have 3 or more shopes/dhabas competing with each other on who can play their music louder. Each shop trying to drown out their neighbor so they can hear thier own.

I have seen the same thing in Vancouver, BC between neighboring CD shops, LOL.

  5. Thats crazy, a human powered wheel. At first I was like wow that guys strong like if he ran on a conveyer belt to turn it, but looked more close to the pic and was like,”what!” that guy is climbing on it. It looks like its stuck and and hes rescuing the people. Haha hehehe Strange world.

  6. Pritham Singh… what’s even funnier is that they did not just move it around….they made a whole act of it. Just imagine the music blaring out the speakers and they are doing flips and twirls as they spin the farris wheel around!

I guess during my days at GNFC in the mid and late 90s, they had got machines to do the the work. Also to all you Early GNFC batches,Hi from Yuvraj Bajwa. When i first joined GNFCS in 94, i was amazed to see the multicultural population of the school it seemed like i was studing in India but Thailand, America and India combined together.

I spent one of my Glorious years of life at mussoorie, learnt the tricks of the trade, Got hooked to rock music and bunked into the girls school one, two many times and got got caught to but that didnt stop me from Becoming The School capatain 98, 99. We visited Mussoorie in March 2006 and stayed in a hotel right above a roller rink. It was not being used, but I think they still use it in the summer when a lot of tourists are there. Did you ever go to Howard’s revolving Restaurant? It’s like the Space needle in Seattle (ha ha). It creaks badly as it turns!

It is a Ferris wheel. Spelling English was not a big feature of mastery for you kids who were educated in India. You have the most unusula and funny spellings. More phonetic than the English language is….Mata:)
