The Guru Gayatri

“The Guru Gayatri of Guru Gobind Singh has the power of the four Vedas, six Puranas and 36 Simritis. All these are equal to reciting the Guru Gayatri just once. Traditionally, only a person who has been initiated by a guru is entitled to chant a gayatri. First you have to find a guru, one with God consciousness, and then he needs to initiate you. Only then are you entitled to chant the gayatri. That is why Guru Gobind Singh recited this Gayatri for his Sikhs, and that is why this is known as the Guru Gayatri. Whosoever shall chant it, the Primal Power, the Adi Shakti, will guard that being.

This mantra is a “Shakti” mantra. Shakti gives one the positive power of God. If you chant this mantra, there shall be no enemy, including one’s own ego, which can overpower you. It is a mantra of deathlessness, and the personal mantra of Baba Deep Singh.” – Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Yogiji (7/9/75)

I have read this in Jaap Sahib but I am not aware this tuk has a special name (ie Gayatri Mantra as referred to in the blog). Can some one explain how it got the specific name and where is this name mentioned in sikh literature please.

  5. Mandeep Singh says:

The word “Gayatri” in literal terms means “joy of singing”.

I remember we used to sung this in our morning school prayers. Something like “Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah…”. Gayatri mantar(s) have very high importantance in hindu religion. The one I mentioned above was in praise of SUN. Gayatri is believed to be mother of all Vedas. But then as usual recitation of some of these Mantra in hinduism is restricted to certain upper classes.

Not sure why singh sahib ji referred this “chhand” as “Guru Gayatri”. May be (my guess) what he implies is that this is one mantra which Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave us in reply to all those various Gayatri mantars that were prescribed to hindus. So that we don’t need to sung mantras in praise of God/Goddesses. Just remember and praise the “aad guru”.

Morever “Gayatri” mantras besides “OM” are very commonly heard in yoga/meditation classes in India.

That is all I know. Somebody more knowledgeable can enlighten better.

  10. The Guru Gayatri Mantra is found in Dasam Granth Sahib Ji in Jaap Sahib on Page 16/17 starting at line 14 written as a Chachari Chand (four lines makes up one chand). It is called the Guru Gayatri for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was given by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to his Sikhs, hence is a ‘Guru’ Gayatri Mantra. Secondly, ‘Gayatri’ means ‘joy of singing’ and the traditional Gayatri metre consists of 24 syllables, typically arranged in 3 lines of 8 syllables. The Guru Gayatri Mantra is arranged in Dasam Granth Sahib Ji in Chachari Chand form with 8 lines of 3 syllables forming 2 stanzas (chand), but still consists of the 24 syllabes metre, which is why it has been given the name Guru Gayatri Mantra. Finally, ‘Mantra’ means ‘mind tuning’.

By many Hindus, the Gayatri is seen as a Divine awakening of the mind and soul, and within it a way to reach the most Supreme form of existence, and the way to Union with Brahman – the One Creator. Understanding, and purely loving the essence of the Gayatri Mantra is seen by many to be one, if not the most powerful ways to attain God.

As a result therefore, we can conclude that Guru Gobind Singh Ji wrote this magnificent poem to connect people with the Infinite, as is the mission of all of the Jaap Sahib and Gurbani. We can alo conclude it has been given the name Guru Gayatri Mantra because it was given by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and follows the 24 metre style of a traditional Gayatri. Satnaam.

  11. Sat Hari singh Khals says:

Sat Sri Akal; Almost thirty years ago I met a Sikh in his 60's, his family had been connected with Nankana Sahib and his father was badly wounded in the morcha there. He told me that the nihungs used to come to certain villages almost yearly and hold a small mela or revival with kirtan, simrian, gatka etc.The nihungs would tell mothers with child or young babes in arms to do japa, chant this mantra as it would cause their children to be Vir Singhas and Vir Singhanis. This he told me was an old teaching of the Nihungs who prided themselves on havinga connections to the intimate warrior disciples of the Tenth Master, such as Baba Deep Singh, Bhai Mani singh.

Yogi Bhajan taught the same thing, that chanting this mantra will overcome fear and give courage.

The Sikh Gurus often recommended the chanting of mantras that are part of larger banis such as mul mantra, Mangala charan Mantra from Sukhmani Sahib etc.

There are many Gayatri mantras the most popular being Savitri Gayatri Om bhur Bhavah savah.

Mantra and the potency they need for each age are different. In the earlier ages the mantric qualities necessary for those ages was best found in Sanskrit. Gur Mantra has four parts each part is a Bij Mantra from one of the yugas. The Ga-Gag ''G'' from Guru in /Wahehguru or gur-matra is the seed syllable of the mantra for this age Gobinda. In this age the best potency is found in gurbani, it works differently than Sanskrit. In the previous ages the most effective dharma was ritual worship or puja in Treta,In Dwarpa yuga fire sacrifices or havans was the best worship and in Satya yuga meditation on the completly undiferentiated Godhead or Sat was the dharma.Sanskit was designed for these practices of Dwarpa and treta yugas while in Kali-Yuga the present age Gurmukhi is the most effective presentation of the transcendental sound current.

Guru Gatri mantra reflect mantric constructions that are geared to be the most effective against the negativity of advanced Kali-yuga which is now begining to manifest. The power of the Nam such as this will counteract Kaliyuga and help establish a small window of light the age of Aquarius. The Nam is God Satnam, that is its secret and power.

I just want to know what is benefit of guru gyatri mantra ? as you said it is a gyatri mantra . In hindu hindu chant their gyatri mantra for protection, help, good health and wealth and for prosperity and peace and much more.

Can you make it clear what is benefit of Our GURU GYATRI MANTRA?

  13. Sat Hari singh Khalsa NYC says:

The benefit is that if you chant the Holy Name as given by the Guru, Guru Gobinds Singh is this case you can participate in the consciousness that brought this mantra from Sachkhand. To be in this consciousnes is to revive the eternal soul’s eternal relationship of love with God.
The Holy Name Harinam is God Sat Nam, the name is eternal sat. Just as in the previous ages God came down through various vehicles or mediums such as Rama and Krishna in this Age god comes in the form of the Holy Name.To chant the Holy Name purely is to experience God in the transcendental sound current form of Guru Gaitri mantra.
Just as Savriti or surya Sun Gayatri is for liberation The sun being a metaphor for the tenth gate [dasam duar radiant with light] entering into which is the process of liberation. The tenth gate is the gateway to the spiritual world. This mantra given by Guru Gobind singh is by several traditional accounts I have heard and From Dam Dami Taksal and Siri Singh Sahib is for liberation.Chant this Name and you life will be sublime.
Guru Gaitiri Will help you overcome fear. The ultimate fear is the death of you material life and conditioning, a fear that often stops you from entering into the higher chakras. It is a fear stemming from our millenium old trepedation of losing our material life as we know no other.Unless we are fearless we cannot relate to the fearless one Nirbhao.

    Sat Hari singh khalsa

    Beautifully said.

are there any people who would like to share their experince of kundalini awakenings. I came across the some info if you do not purify yourself and do not follow a certain path then that awakening of power can be hazadrous to health.

Some people just do excercises for years to force the awakening and then end up at mental hospitals.

However, Kundilini awakening done be seva, humilty, mediatation on God (gurbani) will be protective measures against ill affects. Because we are striving to meet or love God.

The interesting thing is that this world is filled with maya. Meaning that our mind is allured in to pride, lust, ego etc. But once we start the process of mediatation then there is a Secondary Maya, which will allure our mind towards powers and away from God.

People who get their kundalini awakening may get stuck at secondary Maya. It can be easily recognized when those people begin to show powers, or may perceive that he/she is only God and will begin to act like one.

In sikh history, it has been clearly shown that warriors (such as baba deep singh) had conquered death, but they never protrayed themsleves as Guru or God. And these are the signs of true devotion or love towards God.

Interesting to read all this opinions, doubts, etc., I think at the end it does not matter where our Guru´s mantras come from, where did they call them this or that, but most important is that we do practice them and give ourselves the opportunity to go through the experience they wanted to share with us and teach us, we should be teachable to our beloved Guru´s more than spend time revolving in our doubts that come from the “tonto” (spanish) side of our minds and let our souls fluorish while practicing, even 11 mins. give us heavens some times, such has been my experience from this teachings, happy that I became a sikh and my children too, that has been a blessing that change my destiny!!!

  16. Sat Hari Singh says:

The mantras revealed by the Sikh Gurus are designed specifically for this age of Kali-yuga. That they transform people in Kali Yuga is proved by the transformative effects they have wrought on so many Americans who live at the ground zero of Kali-yuga. The Gobinday mantra is the mantra for this age or Yuga Nama specifically designed to rid one of Kali-Yuga type material conditioning as the GaGa in Waheguru is the bij of Gobinday in Gur-mantra. Gobinday which is designed to shake of the dust on the subtle body and chakras. Other mantras in Guru Gaitri do the same.
The chakras are like CDs when they are dusty they will not play in a balanced harmonious way. This Mantra clears that dust those negative habit patterns from life times of material conditioning. Other aspects of the Guru Gayatri mantra are constructed according to Tantric techniques such as Hariang and Karing, used in the transformation of Om to Ong in Mul Mantra, these also zero in on the chakras.
Unlike Hindus we do not only chant bij or one syllable mantras as these do not balance the chakras and tune them into each other but just clear one chakra at a time. This was more effective in earlier epochs when life was longer and simpler and the time to do this was possible. In Kali Yuga clearing just one chakra at a time can lead to imbalances overpowering still weak and imbalanced other chakras. The other aspect is that these bij mantras are not the name of God which has the highest potency in Kali Yuga.
When the chakras are cleared so to is the mind. The chakras being sub-centers of consciousness they will help clear the mind and open up the subtle body of which the mind is part, the mind is not only in the head but in other parts of the subtle body as well. When the mind is clear the radiance of the atma soul shines thru-and the kundalini rises and one perceives the eternal deathless soul as ones authentic nature and therefore has no fear as fear stems ultimately from perceiving oneself as temporary. When one realizes one’s eternal nature one then perceives the mantras as the vibrational form of Akal Purakh and enters or revives ones eternal relationship with God. This causes one to drop spontaneously all material desires for the higher taste of Amrit Nam and eternal nectarian association with God.

                                               rameshchandra , Shantikunj, Haridwar

  18. I am a follower of Guru Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya ( the founder of All World Gayatri Pariwar, Shantikunj, Haridwar, India. Goddess Gayatri is the mother of 4 vedas (Supreme Knowledge) and therefore, it is called as Vedmata also. Regular Gayatri Mantra is a Ved Mantra.  The meaning of the Gayatri Mantra is “It is a prayer to the Almighty Supreme God, the Creator of entire cosmos, the essence of our life existence, who removes all our pains and sufferings and grants happiness beseeching His divine grace to imbibe within us His Divinity and Brilliance which may purify us and guide our righteous wisdom on the right path.  In short it is paryer to Almight God “May Almighty inspire our intellect to the righteous path”. It is a prayer of requesting “Sadabudhi” which is required in the present time of Kali Yug.

The secret of the supernatural impact of Gayatri Mantra in the physical domains of life lies in its unique configuration of the specific syllables – the seeds of Shabda, which is derived from the esoteric depths of the absolute science of Shabda Brahma-Naad Brahma. The cyclic enunciation of this mantra stimulates the subliminal power centers of the inner being.

It is believed by World Wide followers of Gayatri Mantra that 21st Century is bright century and era of Golden Age. The Chanting of Gayatri Mantra will eradicate the “Durbuddhi” from the mind of people and establish “Sadabuddhi” (Righteous Intelligence-Wisdom or Pragya) and this will create the atmosphere of Divinity among the people to bring the peace in the world.

I am glad to hear about the “Guru Gayatri” in Dasam Granth Sahibji in Jaap Sahib. I would request to chant this “Guru Gayatri Mantra” regularly to help in creating the divine vibrations in astral world. So with the help of it the Golden Age of New Era arrives quickly and bring the peace on the earth.

It is interesting reading the various interpretations and perhaps confusion caused by calling the specific lines as Guru Gayatri Mantra. Jaap Sahib is in essence celebrating the lord Akal Purush. Guru Gobind Singh Ji in the Jaap Sahib has embodied all the names of the Lord and his Various Manifestations.
Whether you recite that specific Chand or any portion of Jaap Sahib it is a direct connection to the Supreme Lord. Please Believe that and just recite what you can. It is not easy to do Jaap Sahib and takes considerable training. But who ever does the Jaap Sahib will reap the benefits of knowing the Power of Guru Maharaj and will be Blessed.

Please can someone help me to overcome my 2 big problems jelousy and anger, I tried every possible remedy, simran, path etc but in vain, will this mantra help me or any other please help me . I will be greatful

    • Nitin Vaidya says:

Hi Jasbir, All vices arise from the sansarik attachment. Kaam, Krodh(anger), moh, lobh and Matsar (Jelousy) are creations of God and are designed for betterment in life (remember that these are only for sansarik betterment). Why creations of God, because sansar itself is created by god. It is like attachment with hero in a movie. Neither hero is yours nor the villian. The movie is from the producer. ie nothing belongs to you – still you feel love, hate anger etc.

Each of these vices are whirlpools. If you get stuck in them, then you will spin and sink. But if you detach yourself and stand outsides these whirlpools, you will see them and will control them.

Why I am writing this to you- because you said that Jelousy and Anger are 2 big problems that you wish to get rid of. ie you do get inside these whirlpools and you dont like spinning. The good news is that you are on the right path. So what to do? No mantra will help you at this moment. 1st, start detachment from sansarik attachments. As sant singh maskin ji says “Jo sansar se udaas nhai hota woh ishwar ke marg par nahi chal sakta”. To sansar se uddas kaise ho? For this you have to understand the truth. Mantra practice should start when you are fully satisfied, no problems and no worries. Then you will master the mantra and then it will help you in your weak moments.

You are lucky that you are Punjabi and a sikh. You have two great things that others do not have. A) Guru Granth Sahib Ji and B) Sant Singh maskin ji. Listen to maskin ji and you will realize the truth of life and also will understand Guru Granth Sahab ji much better. If you cant get CDs, pleas go to youtube. When I or Maskin Ji say “Detachment from Sansar”, it doesn’t mean Sanyas. As gurbani says – Raj me raja, Jog me Jogi, Tap me Tapishwar and Grihastha me Bhogi – This is balance of life. Perhaps you are lagging in Jog and Tap. My suggestions are as follows a)Listen to maskin ji’s bani for minimum a month. b)After that start listening to Gurbani kirtan as much as possible, say in car and at home when free. c)Practice some mantra that you pickup from Maskin Ji’s bani. Wish you all the best. Ek Omkar Satnam.

      • Fateh Singh says:

Sat Nam. I would humbly disagree with parts of the above comment.

When you are trapped in a whirlpool of negativity, it is exactly mantra which will free you from your current vibrational frequency and elevate you to a more expansive and elevated thought vibration pattern. Mantra is actually the easiest way to trigger the hypothalamus to reconfigure itself to the vibration of a higher frequency (i.e. the Guru). Then once a mantra (bij > japa > tapa) begins to break up the old patterns, it allows you to open your consciousness to download purer spiritual guidance from the tenth gate, rather than from the lower triangle of chakras, which are often mired in maya and attachment, as well as emotional turmoil.

Certainly more jog sets the foundation for jap, so that comes first in a practical sadhana, but don't wait to begin to use mantra to re-direct the waves of the mind. Use it immediately and often. It would even help you to play mantra on CD-repeat by your bed while you sleep, so that your conscious mind doesn't interfere with alterations you want to affect your subconscious mind.

Detachment from attachments happens automatically once you vibrate mantra properly – while attempting to simply arrest the behavior of attachment through willpower alone is much more difficult and ultimately fruitless – how many times have you told yourself you will stop a behavior yet you go right back to it? Mantra shifts all of that at the core, rather than at the surface. Many blessings.
