Summer Solstice Camp 2006

Coming up, June 16 – 24 there is going to be the annual Summer Solstice Camp that is held in the mountains above Espanola, New Mexico. About 1,300 people come to this event every year from all over the world, to recharge, and uplift themselves. This camp has been held annually since 1969!

I have been to most of the camps since I was born. Every year that I go I experience noticeable changes in my life after the camp. I can’t pinpoint this to one particular thing at the camp, other than the overall experience as a whole. There is something about having this many people coming together to work on themselves; striving to become better people. It is a unique experience. It will definitely challenge you in all ways! Even if you have never done yoga before you can still participate. People of all ages come (1-100) and participate in different ways. This is not a “Sikhi” camp…but more of a spiritual camp. You will see people from all faiths and backgrounds. However, a big majority of participants are Sikhs, so there is a strong Sikh element in the whole camp. A few of my Sikh friends from Singapore and Canada are coming this year and it would be great to have a nice size group from the “Punjabi” community. Myself and some of the local Sikh youth will organize something so that we can all connect and be a support to each other during the camp.

Last year I posted quite a few stories, pictures, and videos from the camp. After seeing and reading about it many people had expressed an interest in participating in the future. So, I am posting this message to let those of you know who might want to come to one of the events, so that you can plan in advance.

Later on I’ll have some more current information for this year’s camp, but you can read a bit about the Winter version of the camp which is pretty much like the summer camp (but smaller). Here is a General Information Packet about Summer Solstice Camp which gives some of the logistical information.

Most of the events start in June. Here is the lineup of the summer camps that are happening here in Espanola, New Mexico (USA). Information about each of the camps is still being put together so I don’t have a way to give you all the information right now. I’ll post the info as it becomes available in the coming weeks.

Summer Events

If you are interested and considering coming to one of the above camps email me, so that I can be of assistance (Especially if you are a student or youth). It would be great to have good participation from my other Sikh brothers and sisters out there. I’m sure it will be an awesome experience for you, and you’ll also get a better understanding of who the “western Sikhs are” and what they are about. I think the more we learn and share with each other the better things will be.

So, now that I have posted this invitation to you all, let’s see who feels called to come and join in this unique “celebration”.

    Bir ji
    just wondering
are there many punjabi sikhs in solstice camp??

  4. Otpreka: Normally people pick one camp. Each camp is different. Of course you could go to all of them…but I don’t think that many people have the time and money to be able to do that.

Gurkirpal: The 3HO camps have not been promoted much within the greater Sikh community so there are not a huge number of punjabi Sikhs who participate. I normally see 5-10 depending on which camp it is. This year we are starting to promote the camps more widely and I’m sure we will see greater diversity of participation.
