Watching a Sadhu lying on a bed of nails. I don’t see guys doing this anymore in India. Nowadays the sadhus have cell phones and internet access.

This was in Rishikesh.They are detaching themselves from the physical sensation. It is a discipline or a tapasia.

   They still do but you’ve to search for them. You’d definitely find some serious(as in spiritual practice) saadhu in few south indian gurukuls and up north in Rishikesh. I don’t have their cell numbers though ;-)

   city saadu are very mordern. I remember in early 90’s there was news in india that saadus at hardwar watch baywatch regularly on starplus(cable channel) and is very pupular series among them. Not sure if they could understand english very well or not :D

   A true sadhu remains a sadhu irrespective of having cell, internet access, car, money….. just as a non sadhu cann’t become a true sadhu just by leaving his cell, internet access…

   i’ve seen a magician do that. i dont think he was all that spiritual.

   Magician does it for money or to put on show for others but saadhu does it for his own self testing. There’s difference. But ofcourse there’s gray area where all sort of saadu/magician can fall.

   Regarding a true saadhu would remain a saadhu with cell phone etc… thats true but too good to be true. I don’t think all these things can make a person focussed. If someone is already enlightened then these things won’t put stress on his daily activity but i reckon being slave to gadgets can be a problem. Just live a life without electricity for few days in africa or some remote area you’d realize how much our mind is slave of these granted luxuries of modern world.

   I’m crippled with internet ;-) lol

   Regarding “I don’t think all these things can make a person focussed.”
   If not used properly, our own eyes can also effect our focus/concentration.

   What is the sanskrit name for a bed of nails? is it a direct translation, or is it a more unique word?
