Summer Solstice 2008 - Audio Recordings

Bhai Kultar Singh and Jatha

Every year during the 3HO Summer Solstice Event in the mountains of Espanola, New Mexico many of us enjoy hearing beatiful kirtan by so many talented musicians from many different backgrounds. I was able to record some of it to share with you all. It has taken me some time to go through the audio tracks, find the good stuff, split them out, clean them up, etc. etc., but I think it is worth the wait! The recordings below are a mix of beautiful classical Gurbani kirtan and western style kirtan from a range of musicians (many whom you might be familiar with). So, sit back, relax and enjoy!  (Audio player at the bottom of this blog post)

Some of My Favorites

Bhai Kultar Singh
This summer Bhai Kultar Singh and his jatha visited our Sangat and it was so inspiring to hear them play kirtan and talk about Gurbani (in English). When I listen to the kirtan it just takes me to the time of the Gurus.

Raj Academy Jatha
This summer we had a lot of classical kirtan which was so great! On Sunday during the week of Summer Solstice it was such an experience to hear all the stringed intruments all together played by the Raj Academy Jatha with Prof. Surinder Singh (UK). It evoked such emotion and longing for the Guru. Waheguru! I’m in love with the taus instrument. It has such emotion and beauty.

Chardikala Jatha
We can always count on beautiful and energetic kirtan from this jatha. There are some great recordings of them. A few of them had some audio distortion, but I posted them anyways because they are still so nice.

Shabad Gurbani at Summer Solstice

One of my favorite things at Summer Solstice is meditating to the beautiful Gurbani Kirtan. There are always a variety of different musicians with variety of styles. There is something about being at Ram Das Puri in the mountains that is so special and sacred that makes it feel that much more beautiful listening to the Kirtan. Sitting with hundreds of others and hearing the sound of the Gurbani resonate and echo in the huge shelter.

I have been waiting a long time for two of my friends to play kirtan again so that I could capture a recording. Nirinjan Kaur (Eugene, Oregon - USA) and Dileep Kaur(Surrey, BC - Canada) have the most beautiful voices, and when used to sing Gurbani take you into the clouds. Just listening to these audio tracks brings me back into the spirit and the longing for the Guru that I know so many felt during that week.

Here are a few recordings for you to listen and download. The first one was sung right before a couple got married and the other recordings are from the all night ransabhai kirtan. I’ll be posting more Gurbani from other musicians in the coming days.

Audio Recordings from Summer Solstice Week

Many people have requested audios from the week of the Summer Solstice camp, so here are a few for you all. If you haven’t already downloaded the mp3s by Ustad Narinder Singh and Murli Manohar (teachers of Chardikala Jatha) I suggest that you check those ones out too!

The first set of audio clips are from the all night Rensabai Kirtan on the last night of Summer Solstice Camp. I don’t know who the musicians are who sang for some of them so didn’t include that. Then there are a some of other recordings of Snatam Kaur, Chardikala Jatha, and others who you might recognize.

Union of Friends

I recently received a wedding invitation from two of my close friends, Siri Amrit Singh and Nirinjan Kaur, who are getting married this June (Right after the Summer Solstice camp here in Espanola, New Mexico). They are such a beautiful couple :) Siri Amrit Singh lived with me and my wife Arjan Kaur for a few years and also worked as part of the SikhNet.com team, so I got to know him well. Siri Amrit is one of my son Narayan’s many uncles. He always looks forward to when Uncle "Aama" comes for a visit.

Siri Amrit Singh is getting married to Nirinjan Kaur who is the daughter of Hari Singh and Guru Raj Kaur (from Vancouver, BC) who are also long time friends. I love both families and am excited that they are getting married.

Nirinjan Kaur is one of those friends with amazing voice and devotion that really flows when she sings. I can’t wait till she comes out with a Gurbani CD! I always bug her about it, especially since her father has his own recording studio and does this type of thing for a living. On their wedding invitation website they posted two audio clips. The first one is really nice! Sounds like a draft for an Upcoming Sadhana Music CD? Have a listen to it below…

Ik Ardaas Bhaat Keerat Kee

It’s late Saturday night and I am going through some of the raw audio files from one of the Summer Solstice Camp Gurdwaras (June 2006), editing out some of the Shabads that I like. Then I come across this one: "Ik ardaas bhaat keerat kee gur raamdaas raakho sarnaa-ee" (shabad text), sung by two of my favorite young musicians (Dileep Kaur and Nirinjan Kaur, both from Canada). Quite a few of my friends have been gifted with such beautiful voices that really come from the heart and take me to another place (Hari Bhajan Kaur and Snatam Kaur included as my favorites!).

Press the play button below (if you are not already hearing the shabad) & read on

As I listen to this Shabad my stress from the day just seems to melt away. I feel myself start to breath deeper; inhaling in, and out, as my muscles relax and my eyes close. I feel myself travel to another place in my mind; sitting before Guru Ram Das Ji; tears of joy flowing down my face as his gentle glance seems to take all my pain and troubles away. I feel the warmth of the Guru surround me, re-assuring me that everything is taken care of, and all is in his hands. The love of the Guru has awakened my heart and roused my soul. Wahe Guru! It is such a blessing we all have as Sikhs to have such a Guru! Yet, we only need to "wake up" and surrender to our Guru. Leaving all your sorrow, worries, pain and troubles for him to take care of. God can revolve the earth, so he surely can take care of your affairs!

As you listen to the shabad; close your eyes; slow your breath down; consciously breathing in slowly, and very deeply (through your nose), filling your whole lungs. Then slowly exhale and let your breath out. Continue this long and deep breathing (in and out) as you listen to the shabad, feeling the Gurus Bani fuse/join with every cell in your body (Ang Sang Wahe Guru!).

Shabad Translation in English: "I am overflowing with sins and demerits; I have no merits or virtues at all. I abandoned the Ambrosial Nectar, and I drank poison instead. I am attached to Maya, and deluded by doubt; I have fallen in love with my children and spouse. I have heard that the most exalted Path of all is the Sangat, the Guru’s Congregation. Joining it, the fear of death is taken away. Keerat the poet offers this one prayer: O Guru Raam Daas, save me! Take me into Your Sanctuary!"  - SGGS Page 1406 - Swaiyas In Praise Of The Fourth Mehl, Bal

Musicians: Dileep Kaur and Nirinjan Kaur (Vancover - Canada)

Shabad: Ik Ardaas Bhaat Keerat Kee Gur Raamdaas Raakho Sarnaa-ee
