Sahaj Singh

On Thursday October 2nd, a good friend of mine, Sahaj Singh was stabbed nine times confronting an intruder in the garage of his home.  The assailant was attempting to gain access to his wife’s vehicle after his wife and two young children had returned home.  Sahaj Singh sustained nine knife wounds, including one that punctured his larynx (throat).  He was flown to University Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair his neck injury.

Sahaj Singh is a Paramedic with Espanola Valley Emergency Medical Services and an instructor for the Para-Rescue Program of the United States Air Force, and a co-lead instructor with the Paramedic Training Program at Santa Fe Community College, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sahaj Singh is more accustomed to being the one treating people in need, but now is his time to receive the support and love of those around him.  It is expected that he will be out of work for 4-6 week.

The REAL SikhNet Youth Online Film Festival

In case the 3rd Annual SikhNet Youth Online Film Festival wasn’t on your mind, the submission deadline just passed. This year I got seriously nervous!! EVERYONE literally waited till the very last day to submit their videos. Before the deadline we only had ONE video submission. I thought we would have to cancel the event. My wife tried to remind me of how it went down last year…..but at least last year we had a few more videos a week before the deadline. I’m sure everyone procrastinated till they knew they had to make the film. How many of you that sent in videos started your video a month or earlier before the Sept 1st deadline?? Grrrrr…..

This year we received about 23 or so video submissions. This is smaller in number than last years 40 some videos, but we still had some great participation. Despite the smaller numbers it’s been exciting watching the videos that people submitted. There are a great mix of comedy, drama and documentary style videos from participants 11 years of age and up! It was great to see so much creativity and everyone’s effort. Every year brings a few of the previous contestants and lots of new people.

Mexican Prisons Turn to Kundalini Yoga

Here is cool news report by CNN about Inmates at prisons in Mexico (the country Mexico, not "New Mexico", USA) being taught Kundalini Yoga as a form of rehabilitation. These teachers as you might recognize in the video stand out with the white turban and clothing and are a product of the teachings of SSS Harbhajan Singh Khalsa (aka: Yogi Bhajan) . Its really cool that people are making an effort like this to make an impact and change these people’s lives. This is the Sikh way of not just serving the people we know, but serving those in need.

Kenneth Cole - The Sikh

"We all Walk in Different Shoes"

A few days ago, Kenneth Cole unveiled one of his new ads on a wall of Rockefeller Center in New York City. The model is, surprisingly, a sardar.

The campaign features Sandeep (aka: Sonny) Caberwal as a Sikh and in the below video he explains about being a Sikh and standing out.

Channel M News Interview about SikhNet (Vancouver)

Download Video

During my recent visit to Vancouver, I had the opportunity to be interviewed for the Channel M News and talk a bit about SikhNet and the Youth Online Film Festival. Roma Kaur (Channel M Punjabi News Producer and Kaurs Magazine editor) wanted me to talk in Hindi/Punjabi, so I did my best to squeeze some in. My vocabulary isn’t that extensive so I couldn’t really express myself properly without using english. When I was in boarding school in India (1983-1993) our school was located in Uttar Pradesh (Dehradun/Mussoorie) so most people only spoke hindi. We did learn how to read punjabi….but our teacher wasn’t that great so we hardly learnt much conversational Punjabi. After my visit to Vancouver I felt that I really do want to continue to learn Punjabi and Hindi. There are not really any people here to talk with in Espanola, but I figured I could find a Skype buddy and we could have conversations in Punjabi/Hindi to get practice.
