Well, it’s been almost three years since I last was rambling about this idea of making audio stories for kids. I had originally wanted to do something more involved with sound effects, so this was going to be a bigger project than I was prepared to take on, so it never happened.
I keep getting emails from parents wanting help and materials to educate their kids about being Sikhs and our history. Sikh Kids having a hard time looking different, being teased that they look like a girl, etc. In these cases the kids have to learn more about why they are Sikhs and give them confidence and courage to stand tall with who they are no matter what people say to them.

While we are on the topic of Sikhi and Youth…there is always the issue of how as a parent we can teach and give our children an experience of Sikhi. How to give something that is more than history and facts, but something much deeper that they can experience for them self? I for one am traveling this path as a parent and figuring this out as I go. My six year old son Narayan Singh is quite a kid. We sometimes joke and call him "Narayan Lion Singh" because he is very much like a lion in his personality. He wants to be the leader of the pack and doesn’t like to be told what to do. He is fast and strong. He always wants to do things on his own terms. He is full of energy and can be very aggressive at times. He also can sometimes react strongly to things and get emotional easily when something doesn’t go his way.

Today was my day to help with the kids camp and I had a lot of fun doing all kinds of things with them. In the evening as we all were sitting around enjoying a nice hot cup of golden milk and listening to some jamming tunes at the "Yogi Tea Cafe", Narayan and I sat next to this very nice lady who was painting people’s faces. Narayan asked her to paint a Dragon on his face which she did beautifully….and then all the other kids wanted to get painted too. Here are some pictures from tonight with Narayan, Gurudev Singh and Prabhjot Singh.

In our tent getting ready to go to sleep. Narayan didn’t want to wash off the dragon.
This evening lots of the local Sikh kids came over to our house. They dressed up in all kinds of difference costumes. We ate dinner and then made went around our little circle here. After we got back the kids dumped all their candy out to see what they got. It was quite a fun thing for the kids! Nothing like loads of candy. When I think of candy….I think "Sick to my stomach". I remember in India when I was in boarding school, one sikh friend brought a huge trunk of candy. We ate so much that we were all sick. In any case…the kids have fun dressing up and taking baths of candy (even if they don’t get to eat it all)! This holiday is quite the opposite of healthy eating, that is for sure!
