Gurbani MP3 Download

I have been recording audio from Gurdwara on Sunday for a while…but have been pretty backed up and haven’t posted much lately. I recorded some great shabads sung by Chardikala Jatha….but I have to take some time to go through them since there is a lot. I also have lots more lectures by Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa which maybe I’ll post a bit later too.

For now here is one audio shabad from a couple of weeks ago sung by Hari Bhajan Kaur and others.

Love of Music (Gathering of Friends)

Hari Bhajan Kaur Singing at Gurdwara

Every once and a while Hari Bhajan Kaur organizes time in the evening for whoever wants to come to the Gurdwara and just sit together and sing/play Gurbani free flowing. You could call it is a Gurbani "Jam" if you like. Basically anyone can sing or play along with whatever instrument. Everything is very casual  and totally improvised as you go, and flows based on who is there. This reminds me of a similar music session with Sikh friends in Malaysia.

A few weeks ago I saw an email sent around inviting people for a musical get-together. I wasn’t able to attend, so I scheduled my computer to record it. Luckily they used the Gurdwara sound system (microphones) so I was able to get the audio.

Here is an audio file of them getting started with a very meditative (I think one might call it "Alaap" style) …Waheguru chanting. I love the background guitar and other female backup vocals. Keep in mind that this is a live recording of an improvised session.

If you like this track you can hear/download more music sung by Hari Bhajan Kaur in the Audio/Video Archive. (Or do a search on the blog for her name and you’ll get all the info and downloads).

The Musicians

Chanting the Gobinday Mukhanday Mantra during the Jaap Sahib Course.

Musical Jaap Sahib

Ok, I’m a music/Gurbani lover, I have to admit it, so I’m always on the lookout for unusual recordings and different musical styles. The past few days many of us here in Espanola and visitors from all over the world have been embarking on a Journey exploring the Jaap Sahib bani during this 4 day experiential course. This morning we started with a beautiful musical rendition of Jaap Sahib sung by mother and daughter, Hari Dharam Kaur and Hari Bhajan Kaur. The audio has a certain esoteric feel to it like you are floating in the clouds. It was great to just sit and meditate on the sound as we all recited Jaap Sahib together.

Background instruments were played by Guru Jot Singh (SikhNet Wale) on the Dilruba, and Hari Kaur on the Harp.

I hope you enjoy it. It’s been another really long day (and more to come tommorow) so best get some sleep while I can.

More to Gurbani to come later……time for me to sleep.

More MP3 files by Hari Bhajan Kaur

Tonight I was just going through my hard drive, organizing files on my computer and I found a couple of audio tracks by Hari Bhajan Kaur from Gurdwara a long while back. Many of you had emailed me that you really enjoyed the last track that I posted (Gobinday Mukhanday) so I figured I would post some more. Hari Bhajan Kaur is gifted with a beautiful voice which I always bliss out singing along at Gurdwara. I keep trying to encourage her to record a CD, and the last time I spoke with her it sounded like she was planning things out. It’s just a matter of time. In the mean time I’ll continue enjoying the soothing vibrations at Gurdwara.

The following track: "Sat Siri Siri Akal" was recorded the same Gurdwara as the "Gobinday Mukhanday" one.

Title: Sat Siri Siri Akal (10MB)
By: Hari Bhajan Kaur (The chanting was lead by Hari Bhajan kaur (Guitar) along with, Hari Rai Kaur, Hari Simran Kaur, Hari Kaur (Harp), Guru Nam Singh and Guru Darbar Singh (Tabla).

I don’t remember the background relating to this song. I tried to write something up…but I couldn’t do it justice. Maybe someone else who knows the story can share some info about the healing walk, the Ram Das Puri Land, and the Native Americans (Where the Summer Solstice camp is held).

Another One….Ray Man Eh Bidh Jogh Kamau

Ok…here is another "bonus" track from a couple weeks ago. I was sitting with them singing so wasn’t able to monitor the audio levels on the recorder…so my apologies for the audio distortion at some parts. Unfortunately once you have this kind of distortion there isn’t much you can do to the audio to fix it (and I did try!). Oh well. It’s a beautiful shabad in spite of the recording imperfections.

Gurujot…you rock! Ever since I heard him playing the Dilruba a few weeks ago in Gurdwara I have fallen in love with the sound of this instrument. There is something to this sound which just moves me. It’s so great seeing so many sikhs learning how to play these instruments which were from the Guru’s time. I am thankful that organizations like Raj Academy are helping revive these instruments in Gurbani Music by teaching.

Shabad: Ray Man Eh Bidh Jogh Kamao (23 MB)
Musician: Hari Bhajan Kaur (vocals, harmonium), Guru Jot Singh (Dilruba, vocals), Hari Simran Kaur (Harp)

Gobinday, Mukhanday…….

Tonight I would like to share a beautiful recording from Gurdwara a few days back of a group of the Sikh youth chanting the mantra "Gobinday, Mukhanday, Udharay, Aparay, Hariung, Kariung, Nirnamay, Akamay." The chanting was lead by Hari Bhajan kaur (Guitar) along with, Hari Rai Kaur, Hari Simran Kaur, Hari Kaur (Harp), Guru Nam Singh and Guru Darbar Singh (Tabla). It is so inspiring when other Sikh youth get together and sing from the heart. When someone does this I think it really penetrates the Sangat and everyone feels inspired.

This audio track is about 14 minutes long and is a great meditation. Some of you may have tried the other meditations that I have posted in the past. If not…or if so…. give this one a try.

The audio track changes and progresses all the way through it, building energy. I love the chorus sounding voices of all of them singing together. Then the Intertwining of voices together singing different parts.

This mantra is from Jaap Sahib (pauri 94-95) by Guru Gobind Singh. It contains the eight facets of God that we all have to deal with. Gobinday, one who sustains us, Mukhunday, one who liberates us, Udharay, one who uplifts us, Aparay, who is infinite, Hariung, who does everything, Kariung, for which grace everything is done, Nirnaamay, nameless, desireless, Akaame, is by itself.

Har is the creative energy of God. The four repetitions of Har give power to all aspects and provide the power to break down barriers of the past.

To Meditate to the Mantra…
Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine, or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. With the eyes closed chant the mantra with the tip of the tongue hitting the ridge of the palate. The tongue must be stiff. Pull in the navel slightly with each "Har". The closed eyes must be fixed on the tip of the nose to maintain concentration. The closed eyes, fixed on the tip of the nose, focuses our attention, centers us and stimulates the pituitary gland. Chant 11-15 minutes when you wake up and 11-15 minutes when you go to bed. You can also listen to the mantra on auto reverse when you sleep.
