Charanjeet Growing Up

Charanjeet Kaur has grown a lot. She is 7 months old today and changing so much. She has gone from the “baby blob” which can’t do much…to a Girl that is quite active and energetic. She is getting close to crawling…but is in so much of a hurry to stand. She is moving all over the place and really getting used to controlling her body. Her first tooth came in a week ago and she is eating food with us. When we eat at the table…if she doesn’t have food…she tries to go for our food. I can already tell that Charanjeet is going to be a strong woman. She knows what she wants and goes for it. It can be hard raising strong kids. Narayan and Charanjeet are both alike in this way. It takes a lot of discipline and patience. Charanjeet isn’t sleeping very well…which means Arjan isn’t either, so I am starting to take the “first shift” at night with Charanjeet so that Arjan can get a bit of sleep. I remember with Narayan the first year and a half we hardly got any sleep. It can be hard….and I am sure I am not alone in this type of thing when raising babies. In an older blog post that I wrote about my advice and experience of being married I talked about different stages being like Karate belts. I have to say that…now that I have a second child…I would have to add a level above the “black belt”. It’s a whole different level when you have more than one child. There are always so many things to take care of and never seems to be enough time. But I guess that is how life is….so we try to do the things that are most important and pressing.

One of the things that I have wanted to do was setup a forum or section where Sikh parents could dialog and discuss issues related to parenting. I’m sure people discuss this a bit…but I think a lot more could be done to help eachother and share experiences. It is not an easy task raising a Sikh child these days so whatever ways we can support eachother would be great.

Here are a few recent pictures of the kids…..

Happy 8th Wedding Anniversary to Gurumustuk Singh and Arjan Kaur!

Gurumustuk Singh and Arjan Kaur
Today is Gurumustuk Singh and Arjan Kaur’s 8th wedding anniversary! Wahe Guru! Here is one of the most perfectly matched couples I know - they both work hard and play hard, and love the Guru and each other deeply. Their marriage is a true amalgam of spirits - one soul in two bodies. May Guru Ji ever continue to bless them in their marriage and in their constant seva to the Espanola community and to the world. May all young couples look to them as an example of what a marriage that has the Guru at its center can be and should be. May you both be blessed with health, happiness, prosperity, grace and the deep and abiding love of Guru and Sangat that is the essence of your marriage.

P.S. - Do you know how hard it is to find a photo of Gurumustuk Singh and Arjan Kaur together? OMG… he’s always got the camera in his hands. Thank God he handed it to someone else this one time so we could have this snap of them together.

…..Guruka

Thanks, Guruka for the surprise and words about me and Arjan! It was most unexpected.

Here are some articles that I have posted on the blog this past year relating to marriage that you all might find interesting.

Sledding Down the Hill

Yesterday we were lucky to get a bunch more snow. I don’t remember the last time we got this much snow. So, we called around and got a bunch of friends to go sledding with us. It was so much fun! We made a few different sled tracks…and then I ventured off to find a spot to make an “adult” sled run. I found one spot on the hill which I dubbed the “double diamond” run (AKA: the fast and difficult one). It was even scary for me! Snow blowing in your face so you can hardly see….while you rush down the hill…trying to avoid big rocks.

Any other people having snow in their area that you can sled in?

Even Charanjeet went sledding a couple times with Arjan. You can see Charanjeet bundled up on Arjan in this picture.

Post-sledding Relax time after some yummy home made dutch hot chocolate

After a day of sledding, Narayan and Charanjeet were being silly as usual. Here is a video of Narayan making lion growl sounds (endlessly!), trying to make Charanjeet Laugh. These two siblings love each other so much. I just love watching them laugh hysterically together, it really makes me happy seeing their bright faces with so much joy.

Snow, Snow Everywhere!

Well, we have been lucky this holiday season to get the best of both worlds. We just got back from sunny warm Florida with ocean and beaches….and now that we are back in New Mexico we just got a ton of snow. How often does a kid get warm beaches and snowy fun all in one week? It snowed all last night! Yipeee!! In the morning it was like a winter wonderland. I love waking up to seeing snow all over. As soon as we woke up we got dressed in our ski/snow gear and went out to play in the snow. Lot’s of fun! I just wish the snow didn’t melt away so fast.

I’ve had a bit of a cold since I got home so have been trying to rest. Perfect weather for just snuggling up and watching a good movie. The fireplace has been burning all day keeping the house nice and cozy.

A friend lent me the first season of the American TV series called "The West Wing". I don’t watch TV much so didn’t get into any TV series (I hate commercials). I just rent movies/DVDs and watch when I have time. I ran out of movies to watch so when my friend had the "West Wing" series DVDs at langar….I thought I would give it a try. One of my neighbors used to be pretty fanatic about recording them and never missing one so I thought it might be worth a watch. Now I’m addicted….and finished the fist season…waiting to get my hands on the next set of DVDs. It’s nice to just relax and get my mind of normal day to day stuff with a good movie. I guess you could call this my distraction/getaway of sorts.

Our Dogs, Sophie and Khalu having fun playing around in the thick snow.

Narayan taking some jumps on the trampoline which is covered with snow. There was so much snow on it that you didn’t get much of a bounce.

Winter Solstice Pictures

Well, I am back in New Mexico. I had a great time with my family and at the winter solstice camp. The camp activities were so packed that I hardly had a chance to take any pictures. Here are a few picture, mostly from one day when I was with the kids camp and watching the 5-7 year old boys.

Charanjeet being her normal smiley self.

Narayan at breakfast on my mother’s birthday

Narayan is learning about money so wanted to sell some stuff to make some money. Here he is with some friends selling sodas and almond butter balls.

During winter solstice people either stay in tents or in camp style cabins.

The kids doing yoga in the morning.

Some of the kids getting ready to ride horses

On on of the days I was the guide for the 5-7 year old boys. Here is a picture of some of the boys and girls from the day.

The horse checking out Charanjeet. Looks like he thinks Charanjeet is a candy or snack.

Here is charanjeet’s excited reaction with the horse right in front. I guess she is a horse lover :)

A picture that Narayan took of me when I was in a tree.

Swimming time!

Some of the kids swimming in the lake.

Making cools stuff with the sand and plants.

Bonfire! On the last night we had a huge bonfire.

Nararayan watching the fire.

We were just about to leave the camp and Narayan jumps in the lake with all his clothes.

Florida Vacation Pictures…

I’m still on vacation… but here are a few pictures from the past week or so. I have been relaxing and really taking a break from the computer (and it helped that the last place I was staying (in Orlando, Florida) didn’t have an internet connection; though that didn’t stop me from walking around with my laptop searching for wireless signal :)

One more day to go of beach and water fun and then we are off to Lake Wales, Florida for the Winter Solstice camp.

Here is a picture from yesterday in Delray Beach, Florida. On Saturday my parents flew down from New York and met up with us and we drove down further south to the beach. It’s nice being away from the big city (orlando).

Charanjeet at the beach playing in the sand….caught making a silly face.

Narayan and I making a sand castle

Seagulls would glide and float right over our heads. They were pretty close like they were waiting for me to throw up some bread or something to eat.

Dadaji and Charanjeet sitting outside in the morning by the lake watching the ducks go by. Charanjeet loved watching the birds in the morning as the sun came up.

A wave in the ocean crashing into Narayan

This is from our "Safari" ride at the Disney Animal Kingdom. Narayan watching for animals.

Waiting in line for a ride at the Animal Kingdom.

At the Disney Animal Kingdom the areas were broken up into different parts of the world. This picture is from the "Asia" part. and you can see the Anandapur Truck. This "town" was very well done. Every part of it had so much detail in it that it looked quite a bit like India. I did check the bathrooms, but they slacked a bit there…since they didn’t look like Indian bathrooms (I guess that might be a good thing! Hahaha….)

Narayan has been learning to swim but the pool that is near us at home is pretty cold, deep…and not open very often. Ever since we got here to Florida it has been great. Pools everywhere and most of them are fairly shallow. That coupled with a snorkle, warm water and a googles, he has been swimming away. Kids just love water!  He just plays all day in the water!

Charanjeet and her favorite brother, Narayan. They love each other so much. I love seeing them play and break out laughing hysterically.

Weekend Fun in the Snow

This weekend we took full advantage of the snow! The snow doesn’t last that long so we made good use of it. The Santa Fe Ski Basin doesn’t open till next weekend so we all drove up the mountain with our plastic saucers and had some good fun sledding down the ski mountain. It’s a pretty good workout hiking up in the snow; slide down…and then back up again. I tried my best to avoid rocks and frozen snow (AKA: ice boulders)…..but had some good crashes. Ouch! My butt is still hurting. I need to get some inner-tubes, instead of our old plastic saucers which are kind of like riding on a trash can tops. Hahaha…

Even Charanjeet went once with Arjan down the hill on the saucer.

Every sunday after Gurdwara we play an awesome sport called Ultimate Frisbee. We play every week (almost all the time),  whether  it rains (though this doesn’t happen much)….it’s sunny (it’s almost always sunny)…. the wind is blazing (this happens a lot)…or it is snowing. This afternoon I showed up and was surprised to see that the football field was still covered with about 6 inches of snow. So much for making fast cuts back and forth. Too slippery. By the end…my toes were like ice-cubes and shoes all wet. Brrrr (but fun!).

Narayan normally comes with me to the field when we play sports on Sunday. Here he is with a CD player listening to some music and eating a snack.

The window of my office had some really cool looking icicles hanging down from the security bars.

Winter is Finally Here! First Snow….

The long awaited snow is finally here! This morning it started snowing and it has been snowing and and off all day today. This evening it started to really pick up. There must be at least 8 inches of snow on the ground. Yippee! We went out after dinner to romp around in the snow for a bit of fun. It’s still snowing now (9PM) so I’m looking forward to a big pile of snow in the morning. There nothing like waking up to snow all over. We’ll probably get our snow gear on and roll around and have fun! I’ll have to get out the sleds. Maybe this weekend we’ll drive up to the mountains and go for some good sledding. Fun fun!

Any other snow lovers out there? I feel ripped off if we get a winter without much snow. Without the snow winter is just cold and boring. Snow brings everyone out to play and makes everything bright and beautiful!

A Picture earlier in the day from my office window.

Arjan and Charanjeet. Night fun in the snow!

Playing and Having Fun

Last night all of us lying around and playing. Charanjeet and Narayan were laughing non-stop. It was so much fun. There  is nothing like the laugher of children!
