Why is this book relevant? Punjabis and Sikhs worldwide are addicted to drugs/alcohol and other negative habits. This is one proven system that has helped thousands.

In today’s world of quick fixes, we strive for ease and comfort. It is easy to slip into complacency and go to sleep in our own lives.

Meditations for Addictive Behavior provides a complete guide to Kundalini Yoga techniques developed by Yogi Bhajan to assist in spiritual awakening and the recovery from addiction.

These meditations can help break destructive tendencies and reawaken the self. Individuals, teachers and counselors will find this book an inspiring introduction to life-changing habits.

Today we have a sincere unhappiness and people are continuing to look outside themselves for their answers. What we do is we teach people how to find that peace within. That’s where the answers lie. We don’t create any miracle, we give simple food, simple exercises and a simple way to think." - Yogi Bhajan

Most of our lives are spent doing things out of habit - how we walk, talk, dress, eat, and especially how we think! Some habits are beneficial, but many are not. They tear us down and only give us temporary pleasure. Yogi Bhajan called these "self-defeating habits." When they get out of control, they become addictions.

Overcoming our addictions can seem daunting. The key to change is to substitute positive habits for self-defeating ones. "Meditations for Addictive Behavior" is full of positive habits you can incorporate into your daily life to replace the addictive ones that are jeopardizing your health and happiness. It is your birthright as a human being to be healthy and happy. Claim it!

By practicing these twelve meditations, utilizing the nutritional tips, and reading the inspiring words you can accelerate your self-healing process and enhance your personal spiritual awareness.

So take the first step. Try the first mediation. Make it a habit and see for yourself : "Doing is believing."

I am grateful to Mukta for giving us a book which is truly a treasure and a blessing for those who are ready to improve their lives. - Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa

 Introduction from the book:
In 1969, Yogi Bhajan came to America to teach Kundalini Yoga. He found young people taking drugs to escape the emptiness and isolation of their cultural environment. Middle class housewives were taking pills with a distorted hope of numbing themselves from an inner unhappiness. Businessmen used alcohol to deal with stress and to help them to relax. At the same time, Yogi Bhajan found people in the West seeking spiritual fulfillment.

Yogi Bhajan began addressing these problems at a grassroots level and started teaching Kundalini Yoga and meditation classes. Slowly people experienced an alternative way of feeling good naturally.

As an experiment, he housed two heroin addicts in his center in Washington, D.C. for two weeks, in a 24×7 controlled environment. The core of his treatment program for them was Kundalini Yoga and meditation. Both men experienced an amazing transformation. Out of this SuperHealth was born.

Inspired by the results in Washington, the Tucson, Arizona center conducted a pilot project for a drug user to enter treatment. This was the beginning of a residential program that would come to be accredited by the prestigious Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, eventually receiving its highest commendation. In 1978, SuperHealth distinguished itself as being in the top 10% of all treatment programs throughout the United States.

Over the years, SuperHealth developed into a systemized program with customized treatment plans for behavioral addictions including stress, substance abuse and other unhealthy habits and emotional disorders. The program included three Kundalini Yoga and meditation classes each day, providing a specific detoxification and rehabilitation diet complete with fresh juices, a vitamin and herbal regime, therapeutic massages, Humanology sessions (applied psychology from the perspective of Kundalini Yoga) and individual, family and spiritual counseling.

In 2004, Yogi Bhajan’s life long goal, for these teachings to be brought back to India, became a reality. The Punjab government invited SuperHealth to conduct a 90 day pilot project for drug users in Amritsar, India. In October of that year, with a team of professional volunteers, the program opened to serve ten clients. The experience profoundly changed their lives. A research paper in “The Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse” has been published in 2008 on the effectiveness of the program in Amritsar.

The problem of addictive behaviors and unhealthy lifestyles spans all cultures and is becoming increasingly acute as globalization spreads. To address this concern, SuperHealth is conducting training programs for yoga teachers and healthcare professionals. Once trained, these people will be able to serve their local communities.

We offer simple meditations with inspirational words for you to use in your everyday life. These are the original teachings that Yogi Bhajan used when he first came to America.

It is our blessing to share them with you. Many find that the practice of this technology is more easily experienced by the heart than by the mind.

Yogi Bhajan taught that the birthright of all people is to be happy and live in peace. This is our prayer.

I currently have a blackberry phone which has helped me test lots of things, but with the growing popularity of the Apple iPhone I would like to test on this phone as well so that we can create apps/content for various popular phones.

Excerpts from a lecture by Yogi Bhajan - Teachers Course, Santa Cruz, California, 1974

You must have one door of your home open where people can call on you, people can trust you, people can get help from you, people can approach you. There are many reasons why people will need to relate to you. The coming times are going to be very hard on the society as a whole. There may be 10 casualties, 50 thefts, 20 robberies, 100 rapes-all that is going on in society. Do you know who is responsible for it? We all are. All acts of insanity are the responsibility of the sane people, because the sane people are lazy and they could not spread the wisdom to the insane people, so that they could have some hope.

Society is feeling a great impact and requires comfort from anybody who can give it. The greatest thing on this Earth is to serve the people of God. That is the highest act a man can do for any other man, but it has to be positive - not that you go help somebody and drag yourself down and get into the pit yourself. You have to be very firm, very honest, very constant, very insistent, and very persuasive. And you have to be very sweet, very kind, very serviceful, and very righteous. These two things go together.

You are not on a trip to convert people. That is not your responsibility. But you want to be able to proudly say, “I have comforted 50 people.” Provide people comfort, go into the society, live for people. If God, out of His mercy, has pulled you out of that insanity, then is it not fair for you to serve those who are still suffering?

Try to understand that this is yet the time that you can hold the ground, you can still change the time on this planet. Five years ago I used to say that 1974 would be a lesson, and none of you perhaps believed it. See what 1974 brought for you? It has brought you gas at 69 cents (The price of gas before 1974 was about 25 cents a gallon!), energy crisis, and every belt is tight, everybody is getting crazy. It is time to have courage, it is time to have will, it is time to have God-consciousness. Start making contact with people. Don’t sit around becoming "gurus".

You have to live like gods. You have to be universal. You have to give people hope! God will do the rest, I can assure you. They are lonely to their death and they have nobody to talk to. You should know who you are. The time is now. It will be too late later on. You’ll not be in a position to do anything. There will be so much insanity that you will be only there to save yourself. It is much better to save the humanity now.

Has anybody called the hospital and said, “We’ll come if we can be permitted, and we can go around and play music”? Have you gone to senior citizens centers where they are sick and lonely, to give them music and take them food?

Expand. Get out and spread yourself. Give people hope, give people love, give people service, give people trust. Tell people you care for them. Do something now.

Hope is brought to people by people who believe in God and experience God-consciousness. They are the image of hope and they go where there is darkness. One candle is enough to take away darkness from a huge area. I have done enough running around and now it is time for you to start doing it, and I am telling you because you call yourselves teachers. This is one of the responsibilities I want to share with you. I’m doing my bit, you have to do yours, and if we all get together, we can do a lot.

This Thanksgiving Holiday it has been nice having lots of family in town to be with. My parents came to town from NY, brother from Arizona, Arjan’s mother and step dad came in from Georgia, so we have been keeping busy the past few days. Lots of good food, board games and good company.
This time of year is always nice for me because it is the one time where I tend to get a break from work and spend time with family. In a few weeks I’ll be heading off to Florida with my son Narayan to go to the Winter Solstice Camp, then on to Crested Butte, Colorado to visit with family and ski/snow board. Before you know it the new year will be here!

This past weekend four of my friends got married and people came from all over the place to be there for this beautiful double wedding. After the wedding we had a fun reception in the evening, but one thing which was different for me was "The Scrapbooth". Basically you pay for this company to bring an instant photobooth to your event and everyone takes pictures of themself. They then cut them out and past them in a "scrapbook" and write stuff next to the pictures with gold/silver pens. (this is then given as a gift to the couple). It’s a great idea and I thought it was lots of fun.

You can also view all the pictures online and download them (which I did). It was fun and interesting to see how people morphed into comedic people with different personalities as they stepped into the photo booth with friends. All kinds of personalities came out, which is evident as you look at the pictures. Normally introverted people just "came out"as the entered into the photo booth.

I made a quick little video in Picasa (a must have photo program) to show you some of the pictures from the evening. First part in time lapse mode really fast, and then the second part a bit slower.

If you want to look at all the picture online enter in the SessionID: november23

If you are like most Sikhs….you probably enjoy listening to Kirtan from Harimandir Sahib (Amritsar, India). However if you live outside India, it is likely that you have to subscribe/pay for an asian channel to get this. I know in the USA they used to show it on a Dish Network channel for two hours every morning. Even though it was time delayed 12 hours or so it was still great. Then they slimmed down the time to almost nothing. I heard that it is only on for about 30 minutes now.

Anyways…I’m thankful that I can listen to the streaming audio, but I just wish that SGPC would at least put up a simple webcam or something similar so we can see the Golden Temple any time (it doesn’t have to be a live video stream from inside Darbar Sahib!). Too much money involved in the contracts for rights to even speak about it. <sigh>

This past weekend I did a live video broadcast of some of my friend’s wedding in Phoenix, Arizona, and was just checking up on emails and happened upon some others doing sikh related broadcasts. I found one person who is broadcasting PTC Punjabi Channel (specifically the live Harimandir Sahib Video). Who knows how long it will last or if PTC will catch on and try to make them stop the broadcast, however, For now….we can all enjoy tuning in at: http://www.justin.tv/darbarsahib

Also listen to Kirtan from Sis Ganj Sahib Gurdwara as well at - http://www.idesitv.com/zeepunjab.php

Ps. If you register on the website and then add the channel as a favorite then you’ll get an email whenever the live broadcast is on.
