The Role of Women in Sikhism

In this video I ask Guruka Singh some questions about women, in relation to being a Sikh and being a part of the Panj Piaray. As most of you know, women generally are not "allowed" to be part of the Panj Piaray in most Gurdwaras.  Even inside the Harimandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) women are not allowed to play Kirtan or do certain sevas. In spite of the Guru’s message  of gender equality and the Guru declaring that there is no gender in Khalsa…these practices continue. Watch the video below to hear Guruka Singh’s thoughts on this subject.

Ritual or Ceremony?

This video began from a discussion about the Amrit Sanchar and became a discussion about the difference between a ritual and a ceremony.  In Sikhi we have ceremonies, not rituals. But a ceremony can become a ritual when no one understands the how and why of what is happening. Water is like a battery for sound frequencies and patterns. Water holds vibrations. I’m sure you’ve seen Dr. Emoto’s work  on this. This fact is the basis for both the amrit sanchar and also the mechanism of the nectar tank at the Golden Temple. Harimandir Sahib is a giant generator that produces a huge amount of powerful, clear blue light that cleanses the entire planet. Thousands of devotees perambulate the Parkarma - always in an a clockwise direction. The sound current of the Shabd Guru is constantly being generated within the temple itself. The temple is coated with a layer of copper covered in gold (a great conductor.) Just as an electrical generator rotates a coil within a magnetic field, the electromagnetic fields of the devotees walking around the walkway create a moving field while the sound current within the temple is magnified and focused by the structure itself. This creates a powerful beam of light that penetrates the axis of the temple and in fact, the earth itself. It is like a huge etheric cleaner for the planet. Now on to the Amrit Sanchar discussion….

Bliss, happiness and comfort!

Sahej Sukh Dhyaan is a wonderful and powerful meditation. Bliss, happiness and comfort! What could be better? We practiced it together at Sikh Student Camp last summer and a group of Singhs and Kaurs came together each morning to do it before morning Japji Sahib. If you practice it, it will give you a very calm mind and the ability to listen deeply and understand the root of any situation. Try starting with 5 minutes and work up to 11 minutes. You can do it for as long as you like, but I suggest 11 minutes for 40 days. Try it and see what happens! Report back in the comments here. Wahe Guru!

Tuning In & Feeling the Guru Within You

In this video Guruka Singh shares his thoughts about feeling the Guru within you. Presenting yourself before the Guru, and experiencing that state of surrender in which you are getting out of the way, letting go, and letting the Guru’s light fill you, and the Guru’s presence fill you. He uses the mantras: "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo" and "Aad Guray nameh, Jugaad Guray nameh, Sat Guray nameh, Siri Guru Devay nameh."

Sir, Are you a Genie?

Guruka Singh told me a story of how back in the 1970’s a little boy walked up to him and asked , "Are you a Genie?" The boy had probably never seen a man with a turban, long beard and white kurta/pajama before. Sensing that this was a time to imprint the magic of bana, Guruka Singh answered…"Yes!" and gave the youngster a big smile. Wide-eyed, the child asked, "Can I have three wishes?!"  "Of course! " Guruka Singh replied, whereupon the child’s mom ran up and yanked him away scolding him for talking to strangers. We often forget just how powerful an impression our bana creates in people. This little video is a remembrance of that moment. We’ve come a long way since 1974 and now many more people know what a Sikh looks like.

Lessons in Letting Go

"I was recently sitting with my friend for a cozy afternoon tea. I had the baby with me. One of his new accomplishments – a typical baby action – is dropping things, waiting for them to be picked up and given back to him and letting them fall once again. My friend commented that we should learn from children – they have no problem letting things go!

This is the first exercise in letting go because if we are grasping on to something tightly, how can we be open to receive? It is by opening and letting go that we enable God, Guru, the Universe, the Infinite to provide for us, to provide us with abundance. A child has no doubt of this, he or she freely drops things, and always expects to receive more. Young children are never worried about what they will get – they simply expect it and it is so for them. Perhaps that is why it is said, that children bring their own prosperity with them.

If we cling tightly to the belief that what we have is not enough, how can we be open to receiving more? If we hold on tightly to a system of dealing with our personal finances which does not work for us, how can we expect God to provide better for us? By the same token, when we learn to give within our ability to give, we are letting go, and thereby opening the door to the flow of prosperity in our lives. We must examine what it is that we are holding on to so fiercely, and we must learn the simple trust of children again. Prosperity consciousness is a journey. Releasing of convictions which impede us from giving and receiving is one step on the journey." - Darshan Kaur
