Quotes of the Day

"If you want to learn a thing, read that; if you want to know a thing, write that; if you want to master a thing, teach that."

"If you really want respect in this life, never advise anybody without being asked; and secondly, when somebody really asks for your advice, just wait until he is ready to listen; and when you find the person is really ready to listen, then always give him polarity, the two sides of the subject as you know it." - SSS Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji

Using Meditation to Deal with Stress

It’s been a long while since I recorded and posted some new videos, so I have been thinking about other people in our community who would have something to share. As a result of this I spoke to Gurucharan Singh who agreed to let me record some videos with him on different topics related to meditation, yoga, and Sikhi. I’ll be posting these videos in the coming weeks as I have time to edit them.

Gurucharan Singh Khalsa, Ph.D., is a yogi, psychotherapist, teacher and writer, and a recognized expert in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. He is also the founder and the Director of Training of KRI (Kundalini Research Institute).

In this video Gurucharan Singh talks about the effects of stress on our mind and body and gives a Kundalini Yoga excercise and meditation to help you deal with this stress.

The Beggar Boy

by Sat Mandir Singh Khalsa (Virginia), Grade 12 Miri Piri Academy, Amritsar, India, December 10, 2006

"A few weeks ago, during a so-far uneventful G.T. (Golden Temple) trip, I was walking along, minding my own business, when I suddenly felt a tug on the side of my chola. I looked down and saw a scrappy-looking beggar boy about seven or eight years old staring up at me, hand outstretched. He looked pitiful. He had long, greasy hair that was draped sloppily over his face and almost concealed his big, round eyes, which portrayed an emotion of deep sorrow. A tattered hemp shirt that was much too small for him was pulled as far as it would go over a cavity of a stomach, which indented his skeletal frame. Covering his twig-like legs was a pair of old, hand-me-down trousers that were torn and faded from generations of use. His feet were shoeless and calloused from many years of walking barefoot through the rough streets of Amritsar. From head to toe, he was covered in a thick coat of dirt and grime that darkened and splotched his skin.

Interview with Prabhu Singh - Sikh professional

Picture Above: Prabhu Singh in the wilderness near his work place

Shortly after the catastrophic events of 9/11 a Sikh, Balbir Singh, was murdered in Arizona. Other Sikhs have been severely beaten, Sikh Gurdwaras vandalized, and countless taunted with labels of “Arab,” “Osama,” and the like. The misplaced blame for terrorism on Muslims and any one appearing Middle Eastern has hits Sikhs as well. The idea of a "collective guilt" is paltry, but it is ironic that Sikhs are targeted because Sikhism is completely separate from Islam and the current conflicts in the Middle East. Some Sikhs believe that they have gotten even more discrimination than other groups because of their distinct attire of turban and beard. Challenge is not new for the Sikhs who have historically protected the religious freedom of all people against extreme odds. Additionally Sikhs have faced massacres at the hands of Mughal and Afghani invaders in 1746 and 1762, as well as British officers in 1919, communal rioters in 1947, and the modern Indian Government in 1984. Sikhs, who have always been a visible minority, have faced times when a price was placed on each head of a Sikh. Now, many Sikhs have cut their hair and have taken off their turbans to avoid discrimination.

In the remote location of Los Alamos, New Mexico, four Sikhs work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This high security laboratory is most recognized as the birthplace of the atomic bomb, and has been recognized as one of the premiere scientific institutions of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Narayan Finished with First School Year

Well, the first year in Narayan’s school is done. Yesterday was his last day of KG class and he is on vacation for the summer! Yipppeee! He did really well in school and learned a lot. The past few nights Charanjeet has been sleeping better so we have all gotten some rest. This morning I woke up an actually got to do some meditation and yoga before the kids woke up! Narayan doesn’t have any school so we can just let him sleep in. Ahh… Summer is here. I’m looking forward to our little vacation in New York with the family. 10 days….and we are off to NY. It’s a three day weekend coming up so we’ll have to find something fun to do. I need to get out and have some fun. We might go hiking to some local natural hot springs and relax in the springs. Ahhh… I can already feel my tension releasing. :)

Narayan with some of his friends…

Narayan is so lucky to have so many “uncles”. After the graduation we had a small party and a bunch of his uncles came over to our house to celebrate…and then watch a movie with Narayan.

Narayan and Uncle Harbhajan back from India for a visit.

Charanjeet trying to break free from Narayan’s hug. These days Narayan seems to pester Charanjeet from time to time. I guess that is just part of being siblings.

Will the Guru’s Sikhs please stand up?

Opinion post by my friend Gurujot Singh:

As I have been watching this drama around Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim I constantly find myself filled with mixed feelings. On one hand this man is insulting the Guru and making a mockery of things I hold sacred. On the other hand, the reaction from other Sikhs has been disappointing.

Jakara 2007

Jakara is another great youth camp that is organized by a friend of mine which is geared towards youth who are 18-30 years old. I went to a few of the camps and it was great.

Here is a cool promo video for the camp which introduces the topic for this year which has to do with unity, caste and division. Too often we do things to divide ourselves. Whether it is division of religion….finding issues and problems with other religions, whether it is caste, and status, or even just picking at each other and finding fault. The more we start seeing everyone around us has humans and a mirror of yourself (God), the better shape we will be in.

So enjoy the video…and if you can make it to the camp I’m sure it will be worth the time.

"Ravidasia // Khatri // Jatt // Tarkhan…The labels that divide us are endless. Caste, gender, class, and power tear apart our Qaum, our Gurdwaras, and our Pariwars. How do we overcome? How do we forge unity without silencing voices? This year at Jakara 2007, we remember the Sarbat Khalsa. The Sarbat Khalsa is the grassroots democratic collective voice of the Sikhs. Through this discord, we can find harmony." - To find out more about the event go to http://jakara.org

Inspiration Videos in Punjabi?

I have received countless emails of appreciation relating to the many videos that we have made for mrsikhnet.com / sikhnet.com.  A large portion of the videos are short interviews with Guruka Singh Khalsa on all different topics related to being a Sikh. One thing which we would like to do is create a VCD or DVD which could be freely given out in Punjab to help inspire the youth and help give them some direction. I think this would also help deal with the drug problem, because one factor for getting into drugs is emptiness, unhappiness and lack of purpose in life. We already created a DVD which has the videos from the first year, however they are all in English. We also would like to get these videos on TV channels that have a Punjabi/Sikh Audience. In order to do so we would need punjabi versions also. So, the first task at hand is to translate the audio from each of the videos into Punjabi. Then we would use the translation to record a Punjabi audio track which could be added to the video (or as a punjabi sub-title)

This is one of the many projects that we would like to do here at SikhNet, but do need help from the sangat. You can help with this project if you are fluent in English and Punjabi and willing to translate some of the videos into Punjabi. We would need one or two other people who can review the translations and make comments or corrections (since translations can be done in many ways).

If any of you want to be a part of this seva let me know.
