New Generation of Sikh Women Musicians and Gurbani

In the little circle of friends and people that I interact with I have noticed quite a few young Sikh women who have really touched my heart through their music, voice and the Gurbani that they sing. It’s the type of thing that when I hear them sing I just feel bliss and at peace. I know that it might be different for you, and that someone you love listening to might not have the same effect on me, so I am just sharing my own experience.

It does not seem to be very common to have Sikh Women play Gurbani Kirtan in most Gurdwaras (especially in India). We are so used to seeing the typical male ragi jatha. We have never even seen/heard a female jatha do kirtan in Harimandir Sahib. I think times are changing though and it is only a matter of time before we are "out with the old ways" and in with the new. Maybe in the past women were not encouraged or allowed to "take the stage" in Gurdwaras, but I think as Sikh women feel more empowered this will change. The previous obedient submissive woman will change to something more in line with the times. This change I think is happening more rapidly in the west (USA, Canada, UK) where Sikh women are growing up under different circumstances and are able to explore music in a way that traditionally in India was not as common.

In my sangat here things are quite different from the norm. Probably over 95% of the musicians that play at Gurdwara are women. Women around here love to be musically involved! I guess the guys are not as interested in music. Maybe too busy playing warcraft or some other video game. Seriously though, One can only guess what the difference is for men and women. When I was younger I used to love playing piano, however in school I never had the opportunity to learn more or study other  instruments. Now all I have is my voice…so I love to at least sit with others and sing as backup. My mother always tries to encourage me, but I have too much going on in my life right now so will have to wait till a later stage in my life to seriously study music.

I am always inspired when I hear young Sikh women express Gurbani music in their own way. I feel like more and more young Sikh women are feeling empowered and able to use their voice and musical talents to share Guru’s Bani in a way that comes from the heart.

There is something about the musical energy and sound of a woman that is different from that of a man. I feel like women have a motherly nurturing energy and naturally sing more from the heart.

Every culture expresses musically in a different way based on upbringing and musical influences of that region/culture and I see this musical influence through all the new young Sikh musicians. So someone who grows up in America, Chile, Mexico, UK, India, etc., will will be the influenced by the type of music they grow up with. Having grown up a lot in India and America I love music with a mix of western and Indian influence. I hope that the Sikh youth of today feel free to explore music and sing from the heart. Music has a way of bringing people together in a way that words and dialog cannot.

Who are Some of Your Favorite Female Sikh Musicians?

I was thinking about doing a poll, but then I realized that there are probably (or at least hopefully) lots of Sikh women who are musicians out there who I don’t know about. I would love to know some of your favorites! Post a comment on this blog listing your favorites. If you have any mp3 files, send them my way so I can share them with everyone. You can use the service yousendit.com to send the file to my email gmustuk at sikhnet com (make the obvious correction in the email).

I am sure there are many more young Sikh musicians out there but here are some of my favorites, and ones that I listen to. If you click on the links you can hear some of their music and download mp3 files.

(I’m sure I missed someone but this is what I can think of right now)

Teachings about Sikhism in Schools

Here are a few cute pictures sent to us at SikhNet. It’s great to see parents and kids getting involved in this way at their own schools.

Dear SikhNet, Please find enclosed a Group Picture of Students of 4th Grade Baker Elementary School in Kennesaw, GA. My son Chanmeet Singh and myself did a little presentation about Sikhi. We asked a couple of questions about Sikhi and things related to it and gave away prizes like a Kara and a Kanga who answered correctly.  Afterwards, we did turban tying on other class kids where both boys and girls put on dastars.Thought of sharing it with you -   Guru Fateh, Preetinder Singh

Punjabi Lectures by SSS Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji

It’s been a while since I posted a Punjabi lecture by Siri Singh Sahib ji and have gotten some email requests for more. I have a whole bunch of lectures that someone recorded during one of his visits to Singapore/Malaysia in the late 1970’s. My Punjabi isn’t that good so I am not able to understand so much. Hopefully those of you who are Punjabi speaking will enjoy them. I think I might just post the whole bunch up since I am unable to summarize them for you all.

UPDATE! - 25 Punjabi Lectures Online!

Over the past 35 years SSS Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi ji gave thousands of lectures, however they were mostly in English. So these twenty-some lectures in Punjabi are a bit rare. It turns out that I had already posted this lecture, so am removing the link and uploading the whole set of 25 Punjabi lectures that I have.

They were originally recorded on cassette tapes and many of them crossed over multiple tapes, so I had to spend some time going through all the audio files to edit and patch them together so the lectures were complete. A few of the lectures are missing the beginning or end.

Normally I would post a link to download or listen to the audio right here, but 25 links is quite a few. So to listen to the audio lectures (and download) go to the MrSikhNet Audio/Video Archive and click on "Educational"  then "Siri Singh Sahib" then "Punjabi Katha".

Guru Ram Das Lullaby

I remember the many nights when I was a kid that my mother played the "Guru Ram Das Lullabye" with her guitar as I drifted off to sleep. This is a beautiful lullabye which is from the 1970s…and is one that I now sing to my children. The following recording is by Gurushabd Singh and Sat Kartar Kaur from 1978. Hopefully you and your children enjoy it as I do. It’s a great one to put the kids off to sleep.

I did my best to type of the words from the recording. Here are the main lines:

Close your eyes, it’s the end of another busy day. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of other children slept this way, with Guru Ram Das to pretect them, keep them safe all through the night.

Oh…..Dhan Dhan Guru Ram Das, Rakho Saharanai.
Meditate on Guru Nanak, may you love God with his clarity.
Meditate on Guru Angad, may devotion fill your heart and set you free.
Meditate on Guru Amardas, let none leave your house unfulfilled.
Meditate on Guru Ram Das, Your prayers will heal the weak and the ill.
Meditate on Guru Arjan, his poem is a jewel beyond all words.
Meditate on Guru Hargobind, You’ll find God on heaven and on earth.
Meditate on Guru Har Rai, God and you shall never be apart.
Meditate on Guru Harkrishan, his sacrifice brings compassion to you heart.
Meditate on Guru Teg Bahadhur, no enemy will disturb your inner peace.
Meditate on Guru Gobind Singh, defend truth till your soul is released.
Siri Guru Granth Sahib, may Gurbani be the love of this child’s life. May it fill their hearts with wisdom and courage to bear the test of the time.

Fear of Yoga

By ROGER CARLING KELLY  - Feb 21 2007  ( www.terracestandard.com )

Nothing really scary about Yoga

PEOPLE USED to think that the world was flat, that herbs were the work of the devil.  People used to think, and still do that this global warming is all nonsense, and that Yoga is a religious cult that will corrupt and poison the minds of individuals.

Someone interviewed on the CBC a little while ago stated that there is God and the devil and that the devil comes in many disguises, and that once you open the door to him you’re in real trouble – referring to Yoga being offered in the school system.

I agree that the devil is here, but not in the form of Yoga – rather in the form of ignorance and fear.  Education and knowledge are so important because ignorance is so destructive and harmful.  Most of this thinking goes along the lines of Yoga equals eastern religion equals evil.

People still holding these beliefs need to know that the world is not flat; that global warming is a reality and that Yoga is not a religious cult that they must fear or feel threatened by.

It has nothing to do with religion at all.  It has no fixed dogma, limited belief system, or creed that one must adhere to.  A person can belong to any religion, and many do, and yet still practice Yoga.

Just as an athlete can practice certain aspects of Yoga while continuing the sport of their choice, so a Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist or Sikh can practice Yoga and become a better Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist or Sikh.

Japji Sahib

Here is another inspiring and thought provoking lecture by Siri Singh Sahib ji about Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Japji Sahib. This is a video recorded during the 4 day Japji education course from June, 2003 in Espanola, New Mexico.

This lecture was one of the few last lectures by Siri Singh Sahib before he passed away in Oct 2004. As his health deteriorated he wasn’t physically able to teach as much.

Japji Sahib contains universal teachings for anyone seeking Truth. It contains timeless wisdom and is said to give answers to life’s deepest questions.

Download: Video / Audio

If you enjoy the above lecture you can purchase a professionally produced two DVD set. It contains an additional lecture by Siri Singh Sahib as well as highlights of lectures, presentations and meditations from the Japji Course 2003 by some great teachers and musicians. It offers four hours of in-depth knowledge of Guru Nanak’s divine teachings of Japji plus a beautiful full length melodic recitation by Chardi Kala Jatha with visual cues for you to accompany the recitation.

You can order the DVD set online at: Spirit Voyage or Ancient Healing Ways

Yoga - Teachers - Leaders - Sikhi

It seems that whenever I get sick I have a lot of time to think about life or whatever is on my mind. As I usually do, I write down those thoughts and share them with you all. There is something positive for me that comes with feeling terrible, and lying sick in bed. I am now at the tail end of being sick and starting to feel more normal so am able to write down my thoughts.

Even since I started SikhNet I have felt a pressure from some of the Sikh community about being a Sikh. There has always been this feeling of "us and them" because of the differences of our origins as Sikhs. After receiving so much negativity from people I am normally hesitant to post "too many" lectures/articles by Siri Singh Sahib. I think that most people don’t realize the impact that the Siri Singh Sahib had on myself and countless others who have grown to become Sikhs and are not originally from India. He shared the teachings of the Gurus, taught on just about every aspect of life, and these teachings are what have inspired so many to have healthier, happier and holier lives. Already a few generations have grown up under his guidance and leadership.

He was unique in that he was able to connect and reach out to people of many different cultures in a way that had not been done before. He is no longer here in body but the teachings that he shared throughout his lifetime are still alive in all those that he taught, and are what I share with you on this blog.

He used to always say… "Don’t love me… love the teachings" …. or…. "I have not come to get students, but to create teachers for tomorow".

Another one of his messages which is a constant reminder to me, and check for myself in not letting ego take hold when you serve others.

"A teacher is not a person. He is like a water pipe. A pipe brings water to you; pipe is not water, water is not pipe. They are just media. Teacher is a medium of teaching. It is the teaching which you live, not the teacher."

Me and My Turban (on BBC Radio)

"How hard is it to be a turban-wearing Sikh? At a time when outward religious symbols are under constant scrutiny, this Asian Network Report goes back to basics and unravels (excuse the pun) what’s tied up in the turban." - Listen to the  BBC Radio program

In this radio program you’ll also hear a segment which is an interview with my friend Ashvinder Singh about the RateMyTurban.com website. Go Ash!

10 Principals to Live By

Today as I was resting at home trying to recover from being sick I watched an old class that Siri Singh Sahib had taught in Los Angeles. During the lecture he talked about how he when he was very ill he had shared some thoughts with Siri Simran Kaur (who was like a daughter to him) and said that if she practiced these things then she could avoid danger.

I remember back in my high school days reading the below advice and thinking a lot about it. It’s like any wise advice, sometimes it doesn’t fully make sense until one really thinks about it more deeply. I think the different points were relevant and helped me at different stages of my life.

Practical principals to avoid danger to yourself

  1. If you don’t want enemies, don’t have friends.
  2. Love is not a dove.
  3. Don’t be so sweet that people will want to eat you, or so bitter that people will want to throw you away.
  4. Open the lips, Sink the ship   (In other words, your words and the things you say have a great impact. Use with consciousness).
  5. Excellence, Elegance and Grace are the three elements of a human being. If somebody challenges these three in you then avoid that person.
  6. Only share your strengths, not your weaknesses.
  7. If somebody says "I Love you", wait for the next step. People use love as a hook, they say they love you but they are only out to get something from you.
  8. Trust all for nothing.
  9. Remember your blessings over your weaknesses.
  10. Don’t utter words in friendship that can be used against you in animosity.
