Espanola Gurdwara - Live Audio Broadcast

Ever since we did some improvements to our Gurdwara a few years ago I have not been broadcasting our local Gurdwara on the internet. I used to do a live audio/video broadcast for many years every Sunday. However as I started to become the family man and more busy with work it was more difficult to cover.

I’ve been meaning to start this back up again, but haven’t gotten around to it yet because I have to figure out a way to economically setup a few permanent cameras that I can show video (or still frames that update periodically).

This morning my wife was asking me when I was going to set this up again because it is getting really hard for her to sit in Gurdwara for a long time being very pregnant. So, this was a little motivation to at least get the audio part going again. This way she can listen to ghe Gurdwara from home when she isn’t feeling well, or needs to go home early to rest.

So, this message is just to let you know that Gurdwara here in Espanola will be broadcast live every Sunday (starting right now). So, if you are up and awake at the time then you can tune in and virtually be a part of our Gurdwara here.

We don’t have “professional ragis” who are full time, so the Kirtan is just played by members of the Sangat who wish to do kirtan. Musicians are both young and old, western and eastern, so you’ll hear a mix of styles.

Ps. I added a permanent link on the left hand navigator here on my blog which says “Espanola Gurdwara”

Yogi Bhajan Highway Dedication - VIDEO

Download File

Here is some video footage from the event yesterday. See below post for details on the event.

Yogi Bhajan Memorial Highway

Ok… it’s like 1AM and it’s been a long day, so I’ll be somewhat brief. We have been having Khalsa Council meetings all week and this afternoon we had a special ceremony to honor the memory of Yogi Bhajan. The city of Espanola and state of New Mexico have dedicated the highway which passes in front of the home of Yogi Bhajan after him. This is a great honor and recognition for all his selfless service to the world. I don’t know of any other highways in the USA which are named after a Sikh.

The New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and other guests spoke at the dedication event. Many of the New Mexico political figures have been long time friends of Yogi Bhajan (20+ years) and have great respect for him and the things that he accomplished in his lifetime.

One of the things that was cool was that originally the dedication was going to be at a different location outside, but a very unusual thing happened. IT RAINED…AND RAINED…AND RAINED. Normally when it rains you are lucky to get 2 minutes of rain. We haven’t had pretty much any rain for over 6 months and the land has been soo dry. It was as if it rained for this very occasion.

Twice a year we hold “Khalsa Council” meetings which is a leadership group of Sikhs from all over the world that come to Espanola to vision for the future. We had been having these meetings and as a result of the rain the Highway memorial dedication could not be held outside. So, instead… everyone came to the Khalsa Council meetings. So the Governor and all the other New Mexico political figures came to “meet” the Khalsa Council. Cool eh?

BBC Interview with Yogi Bhajan in Anandpur Sahib 1999

Here is an interview with Siri Singh Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa (aka: Yogi Bhajan) done by the BBC news service during the 300th anniversary Vaisakhi celebrations in Anandpur Sahib, India (April 19th 1999). The interviewer asks all kinds of questions relating to him coming to America and why many people became Sikhs.

During this time a large group of Sikhs (my family included) came along together on a “yatra” to Anandpur Sahib. Our group had people from all over the world and had quite an experience.

You can browse through the web journal that I put together back in 1999 for the Baisakhi celebrations in Anandpur Sahib. There are lots of interesting pictures, audio clips, videos and stories of our “Yatra” to meet with the Guru in Anandpur on Baisakhi.

Featured MP3 Gurbani File - Snatam Kaur

While I was in Singapore staying with my good friends Rajvir Singh and Guru Jaswant Kaur I was flipping through their CDs and found a stack of live recordings from the Malaysian youth camp which they hold every year in December. This past year Snatam Kaur, Hari Bhajan Kaur, Chardi Kala Jatha along with the Senior class of Miri Piri Academy all participated at the camp.

(You can see some pictures and a writeup by Jugat Guru Singh (CK Jatha) about his experiences at the camp.)

Anways…I have been listening to some of these audio tracks and they are great. There are too many to post them all at once, so in between my normal blog posts I’ll post them from time to time.

Here are two selection for you to enjoy! More to come….

Lead Vocals: Snatam Kaur, Backup Vocals: Hari Bhajan Kaur, Guitar: Guruganesha Singh Tabla: ?

Shabad: Nanak Naam Milay Taa Jevaa (36MB)

Musical Japji Sung by ChardiKala Jatha

While we are on the topic of Chardi Kala Jatha….. I was over at my brother’s house the other night and went into his room and heard an awesome musical Japji Sahib playing. This was a unique musical rendition of Japji Sahib (by CK Jatha) which someone recorded live during the 3 day Japji Sahib course which we had here in Espanola Last year.

There is something about singing Japji that feels so different than just regular recitation. I love the rhythm and pace of it too. I find it very meditative. So, you can listen and download it if you like and hopefully enjoy it like I did.

So, download the audio; Sit up straight so that your spine is not bent. Relax your shoulders. Close your eyes and sing along with the audio. If you don’t know Japji by heart then just listen and meditate on the words.

A professional DVD Set was compiled from the 2003 Japji Sahib Course (here in Espanola, New Mexico) that you might be interested in. This year we are having a new 4 day Jaap Sahib course which is going to be awesome! Come join us if you can.

Chardikala Jatha Kirtan at Harmandir Sahib

The Chardi Kala Jatha (Jagat Guru S., Sada Sat Simran S. and Harimandirjot S.) will be playing at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar again at 6:30AM - 8:00AM (Indian Standard Time) on Wednesday April 26th morning. If you have ZTV/Etc you can watch them at that time.

They played a couple of weeks ago just before Rehiras and did a great job! Does anyone have a recording of it (audio or video)? If someone can record it this time that would be awesome! Let me know….. :)

I tried to listen for a while through the internet…but the SGPC has very limited bandwidth so the audio was breaking up pretty often. I think many people must be tuning into the live broadcast right now.

Sri Dasmesh Band (Malaysia)

When I was in Malaysia I had the chance to meet some of the young Sikh guys from the Sri Dasmesh Band. There were four guys that I met at the four day Baisakhi program (Cheras) and they performed with their bagpipes and dhol drums. I missed their performance so the day before I left they all came over to the house I was staying at and we jammed again on the Bagpipes. It was great fun. (see some of the pictures here)
Here is part of a video that I got from them. I guess there was a news story about the Sri Dasmesh band on Malaysian TV. The dialog is in Malay (the language of Malaysia) however you can watch and listen. It’s cool seeing Sikhs involved in different cultural aspects. Especially exploring other styles of music and instruments.
