Happy Birthday Guruka Singh!

Lo and Behold…today is that special day…when Guruka Singh was born. Today Guruka Singh turned 61 years young! Many of you know of Guruka Singh from the wonderful video interviews that I have done with him over the past year and a half. It is such a blessing to work with him and learn the many lessons that he has to share. As you might be able to tell in the videos, he always  has a twinkle in his eyes. A smile is ever present on his face, and laughter close by, ready to use at any moment (which is often).

Thank you Guruka Singh for all that you are and all that you share in the many ways that you do.

Sledding Down the Hill

Yesterday we were lucky to get a bunch more snow. I don’t remember the last time we got this much snow. So, we called around and got a bunch of friends to go sledding with us. It was so much fun! We made a few different sled tracks…and then I ventured off to find a spot to make an “adult” sled run. I found one spot on the hill which I dubbed the “double diamond” run (AKA: the fast and difficult one). It was even scary for me! Snow blowing in your face so you can hardly see….while you rush down the hill…trying to avoid big rocks.

Any other people having snow in their area that you can sled in?

Even Charanjeet went sledding a couple times with Arjan. You can see Charanjeet bundled up on Arjan in this picture.

Post-sledding Relax time after some yummy home made dutch hot chocolate

After a day of sledding, Narayan and Charanjeet were being silly as usual. Here is a video of Narayan making lion growl sounds (endlessly!), trying to make Charanjeet Laugh. These two siblings love each other so much. I just love watching them laugh hysterically together, it really makes me happy seeing their bright faces with so much joy.

Snow, Snow Everywhere!

Well, we have been lucky this holiday season to get the best of both worlds. We just got back from sunny warm Florida with ocean and beaches….and now that we are back in New Mexico we just got a ton of snow. How often does a kid get warm beaches and snowy fun all in one week? It snowed all last night! Yipeee!! In the morning it was like a winter wonderland. I love waking up to seeing snow all over. As soon as we woke up we got dressed in our ski/snow gear and went out to play in the snow. Lot’s of fun! I just wish the snow didn’t melt away so fast.

I’ve had a bit of a cold since I got home so have been trying to rest. Perfect weather for just snuggling up and watching a good movie. The fireplace has been burning all day keeping the house nice and cozy.

A friend lent me the first season of the American TV series called "The West Wing". I don’t watch TV much so didn’t get into any TV series (I hate commercials). I just rent movies/DVDs and watch when I have time. I ran out of movies to watch so when my friend had the "West Wing" series DVDs at langar….I thought I would give it a try. One of my neighbors used to be pretty fanatic about recording them and never missing one so I thought it might be worth a watch. Now I’m addicted….and finished the fist season…waiting to get my hands on the next set of DVDs. It’s nice to just relax and get my mind of normal day to day stuff with a good movie. I guess you could call this my distraction/getaway of sorts.

Arjan and Charanjeet in the back of the house watching us play in the snow.

Our Dogs, Sophie and Khalu having fun playing around in the thick snow.

Narayan taking some jumps on the trampoline which is covered with snow. There was so much snow on it that you didn’t get much of a bounce.

An Inconvenient Truth - A Global Warning

Many of you might have heard about the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" which is by the former US Vice president Al Gore. A few months ago I watched the DVD which really helped me understand the issues regarding global warming and the environment. So often we hear the term "global warming" yet I think most of us don’t really understand what this means and how it affects us.

I highly recommend that everyone watch this film, so that you become more informed and aware of the current situation of what is already happening. The DVD is out and available at most retailers and also from video rental companies like NetFlix.

Here is a short movie trailer to give you a taste.

You can also watch this video interview with Al Gore which is interesting and about the film

Winter Solstice Pictures

Well, I am back in New Mexico. I had a great time with my family and at the winter solstice camp. The camp activities were so packed that I hardly had a chance to take any pictures. Here are a few picture, mostly from one day when I was with the kids camp and watching the 5-7 year old boys.

Charanjeet being her normal smiley self.

Narayan at breakfast on my mother’s birthday

Narayan is learning about money so wanted to sell some stuff to make some money. Here he is with some friends selling sodas and almond butter balls.

The lake at the Winter Solstice Camp Site

During winter solstice people either stay in tents or in camp style cabins.

The kids doing yoga in the morning.

Some of the kids getting ready to ride horses

On on of the days I was the guide for the 5-7 year old boys. Here is a picture of some of the boys and girls from the day.

The horse checking out Charanjeet. Looks like he thinks Charanjeet is a candy or snack.

Here is charanjeet’s excited reaction with the horse right in front. I guess she is a horse lover :)

A picture that Narayan took of me when I was in a tree.

Swimming time!

Some of the kids swimming in the lake.

Making cools stuff with the sand and plants.

Narayan carrying a candle in one activity celebrating the winter solstice

Bonfire! On the last night we had a huge bonfire.

Nararayan watching the fire.

We were just about to leave the camp and Narayan jumps in the lake with all his clothes.

Mataji - 60 Years of Love

Many of you know today as Christmas (Dec. 25th), but for me today I celebrate the birth of my beloved mother Sat Kirin Kaur, who today has turned 60 years young. My mother has always been there for me and supported me through many challenges. So much of who I am is thanks to the love and devotion of my mother. Her love for the Guru I think made a deep impression on me very early on; probably even before I was born. I think these are the types of things that a child absorbs like osmosis. She was the Guru Granthi for our Gurdwara in Los Angeles and was always around the Guru and playing kirtan.

It’s no easy task being a parent and raising a child on a spiritual path (I know that now having my own children). So, on this day my love and prayers go out to my beautiful mother. Thank you Mata ji.

Victory March

Victory March
       (Charat Charain)

The Waves of Life roll on …
No one can ever stop them.

Life marches onwards …
There is no one who can stop it.

The Cosmic Laws of Life,
Come from the Heavenly planes.

Who could ever tire of living a Life like this?
But there are many travellers and many guides who have been left behind in the dust.

I, Narindar Pal, sustained by God, walk with steps that never tire.
The Golden Ray of the Inner Sun ever shines within me.
The Silver Ray of the Goddess Moon casts away all darkness.

My Light is God’s Light.
My Story is God’s Story.
The True Guru, the Guru’s essence, lives within my words.
My home is the Sound Current.
My Pranas come from the heavens.
I come from the Infinite One,
And, though all the world may try,
My story cannot be told.

Oh, People! Don’t try to stop me!
Truth is my profession. Samadhi is my consciousness.
I am called Narshima, Ravana, and Narindar Pal.
I bow my forehead wherever the True Guru lives, And utter Har, Har!

Entering into Samadhi, the Yogi says:
We came into the world uttering Har! Har! Har!
Let us never have to visit here again!

Written in the first person as "Narinder Pal," this autobiographical poem is filled with a sense of irrestible and triumphant strength. Narshima was an incarnation of Vishnu, a fierce warrior who killed the wicked king Harnaksh. King Harnaksh forbade all worship of God in his kingdom, because he wanted his people to worship only him. Harnaksh’s son was Prahlad, a devoted man of God who worshipped the Infinite One in the form of Lord Vishnu. It was just as the evil king was about to kill his own son that Narshima stepped in and saved Prahlad’s life. In the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, Narshima is referred to as the "man-lion," and the Guru uses him as the symbol of one who has overcome his animal nature and perfected the power of his human consciousness. Ravana was the demon king who stole Sita from Lord Rama (another of Lord Vishnu’s incarnations.) Ravana is the symbol of the violent, kinetic, unbridled ego. In this poem from the Furmaan Khalsa, the Siri Singh Sahib is saying that people call him many things. Some see him as a hero and some see him as a demon. But in the midst of people’s judgements he simply bows his forehead wherever the True Guru lives and utters the True Name.

Life

ZindageeHere is yet another poem from "Furmaan Khalsa" by Siri Singh Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi Ji. Some of the poems in this volume are so short and simple, and yet they are also very profound and deeply touching. Let me know if you enjoy them, and if so, I’ll keep on posting some more of them as I have the time.

Life

Life is Flowing…

Moment to moment…

Flow with it,

And be sheltered from the hassles

Of time and space.

Life is full of Power…

Live it…

From breath…

To breath!

Snow, snow snow!

It's Snowing in Espanola! What with Gurumustuk Singh posting all those lovely photos from the beach in Florida whilst he’s on vacation, I thought I’d post one I took this morning here in Espanola, New Mexico. Yes, it’s snowing again! I love it. It snowed through the pre-dawn hours and it’s still snowing hard. This is a photo from my back porch this morning.  Look closely at the wall of my neighbor’s house and you can actually see the snow coming down. We’re cozy and warm, working from home today with a crackling fire in the fireplace. All one needs these days is a cozy fire, Gurbani playing on the stereo, a telephone and a good broadband connection.
Wahe Guru! Winter Solstice blessings to everyone! …..Guruka Singh

The Secret

Here’s a film that has been making the rounds lately. It’s called "The Secret." The message of the movie is: thoughts become things. Well that is how the universe works. It is the most basic concept of meditation. In the movie, everyone from quantum physicists to philosophers state that everything is energy: Ek Ong Kar, we and God are one. Basically, if we think negative, critical thoughts, we attract negative manifestations in our lives and if we think positive, loving, creative thoughts, we manifest those things in our lives. What that means is that passionately fighting against something you dislike actually produces more of that very thing. For instance, why do people protest war instead of being pro peace? We have the power to choose what we wish to think about. It’s the most important power we have. What do you choose to think about? Take a look:
