Last month, I traveled to Los Angeles for Sikh Dharma’s annual Baisakhi celebration at the LA Convention Center. I’d like to say it was all pleasure and no work, but that’s somebody else’s life, not mine. Kirtan Singh invited me to come and help their Baisakhi planning team with PR – so the Friday before the event, he, myself, and a few others drove to the Convention Center to scope out the hall where we would be holding our Baisakhi press conference.

Ever since September 11th, we – all of us – in the Sikh community have been profoundly aware of how necessary it is to educate the public about the Sikh faith. About the Sikh identity. Most of all – about the Sikh turban. While Baisakhi is mainly a time to come together as sangat and pray, in Los Angeles, at any rate, it has also become an opportunity to reach out to the public and say, "This is who we are."

Well...I have outgrown the blogger.com blog system and have given up on google making improvents to their blog system, so I am in the process of moving to new blog software which uses the WordPress system. It is really great! I used the installed version on our server...however you can get a free hosted version online at: http://wordpress.com/ , and it even has a way to import all your blog entries from Blogger.com, so if you are wanting to try it out you can setup a new blog and get all your data over.

I've been busy all weekend trying to re-create the blog and accessorize it with all kinds of cool "plugins".

Hopefully within the next day or two I'll get things finished. Till then...I won't have anything on the blog since I'm working on the new one.

I just finished converting the two videos (from PAL to NTSC) of Chardikala Jatha playing kirtan at Harmandir Sahib so I could watch it on my home DVD player. I was going to post the video later on...but after listening to the earlier video from April 2nd 2006 I have been in bliss listening and had to share it with you all. Here I am on my laptop in the living room listening/watching since I can't tear myself away. I like this video better than the one I posted earlier. They also played a bunch of shabads I haven't heard them play before which is nice. This video was done in the evening right before Rehiras (evening) and the one that I posted earlier was from the morning so they are in different raags too.

It's a nice way to spend a friday evening after a busy week. I feel that sigh of relief and peace this evening. Part of it is the feeling of joy of spreading the mission of the Gurus and being thankful to be a part of it. It's awesome seeing so many friends of mine excelling and doing great things in the world (most of whom were classmates or I grew up with). It's also exciting "building bridges" with Sikh youth from other backgrounds and working together. Building bridges of understanding, friendship and commonality. I'm excited to meet up with the Sikh youth that are coming to Espanola this summer! Plus I have the exciting arrival of a new child in my family somewhere around the end of June beginning of July. We'll see how blogging goes after that since it will be a big change of pace for me.

Oh yeah...This is the video where some of the management thought my friend Siri Amrit Singh was a Girl because he doesn't have much of a beard yet. You'll see him playing the Tampura on the right and they zoom in on his face a few times.

Ok...I'm out. I hope you all are having a relaxing evening/weekend.

I wasn't planning to post this video yet...so don't have the normal windows media format for the video download (as well as an audio only mp3 file). I'll post that next week when I am back in the office.

(The challenge is at the end of story)

I was just watching the video of Chardikala Jatha and I saw one of my friends Ramdas Singh who is seen in the video playing the Tampura towards the right side. This made me remember of a story that Bibiji told us recently.

While Chardikala Jatha was playing in Harmandir Sahib Bibiji received some phone calls of congratulation about getting a woman to play kirtan inside Harmandir sahib. She then received some other calls from from management being irritated that they had dressed a girl up as a man to "sneak" in and do kirtan. Obviously Bibji didn't know what they were talking about. She then realized they thought that Ramdas Singh (playing the tampura) was a girl, because he didn't have much of a beard. She cleard it up and told them that he was a boy, FOR SURE. So, the management supposedly instructed the camera people to zoom in on Ramdas Singh's face to show the world his mini amounts of beard from his chin (and that it was not a woman).

This is just too funny. Sorry Ramdas.

Having a woman play kirtan in Harmandir Sahib shouldn't be an issue, and it's sad to see Gender inequality in our very own Harmandir Sahib. Don't get me started on this issue. It's a hot topic for me. (trying to stay on topic)

The challenge....

So, as I was watching the video I wondered if they really did zoom in on Ramdas Singh's face to show his beard. The challenge is to see if one of you can find out if they actually did do this. You'll probably have to download the video and skip through it, or fast forward. Let's see if one of you take the challenge and be the first!

Good Luck! Let the games begin!
If you do find it...post the number of minutes/seconds into the video as a comment.

Here is the latest film by the makers of "Sahibzadey" which tells the story of Banda Singh Bahadhur.

"The movie takes you along Babaji's journey from his first meeting with Dasmesh Pita at Nanded to conquering of Sirhind. Guruji ordained Babaji to reach Punjab to reorganize the Khalsa forces and put an end to tyranny and injustice."

You can watch a short video trailer above or <a href="http://www.riseofkhalsa.com">visit their website</a> for more information. The movie is in Punjabi with English sub-titles. I'll let you know how it is when I get a copy.

This blog post is its debut on the internet, so you are some of the first few to see it outside of South Africa. I hope you all enjoy and appreciate the story (as much you can from the short trailer). The full documentary is about 56 minutes long.

<blockquote>The film chronicles the story of four brave women from poor communities in Cape Town South Africa, who have been abused in different ways during their lives. It explores their experiences and healing using Kundalini Yoga and the creative arts to overcome the pain from these past experiences.</blockquote>
<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Butterfly2-786185.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Butterfly2-783065.jpg" border="0" /></a>Sexual and physical abuse towards woman and children is more common then you probably realize. Even within the Sikh community. It’s one of those "hush hush" topics that don’t get discussed often. It’s important that woman have a support system and way to deal with these issues. Otherwise they can hold this pain for the rest of their life. In this video one of the tools is Kundalini Yoga, which helped change their lives, and allow themselves to deal with the pain.

<em><strong>"What Kundalini Yoga has done for me, a doctor would never have been able to do,"</strong> </em>says Rachma Attwood, now in her sixties.

<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/TheButterFlies2-775017.jpg"><em><strong><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/TheButterFlies2-773660.jpg" border="0" /></strong></em></a><em><strong>"It was as though my body was in knots,"</strong></em> explains Rachma. <strong><em>"Yoga undid them."</em></strong> Attwood believes that Kundalini Yoga and her prayers have brought her to the restorative space in which she now resides.

Desiree Mathinus, who has worked in the laundry facility at the Cape Town military base for 20 years, says that yoga has changed the course of her life forever. Radiant and full of enthusiasm for each day, she and Rachma are training to become yoga teachers so that they can convey their experiences with others in their community to whom yoga is not yet readily available.

<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman4-776631.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman4-775472.jpg" border="0" /></a>The film provided the vehicle through which Desiree Mathinus, who was abused since the age of 7 by a family member, courageously shared her suffering for the first time. Yoga gave her the means to repair her soul. Her husband is a priest and now she uses Kundalini Yoga in her counseling with his parishioners. Her own priest extols the virtues of the Yoga. Margaret Jones and Nomsa Ntlabati, a rape crisis counselor, both sing praises of Kundalini Yoga and the journey it has taken them on.

<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman5-750811.jpg"><strong><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman5-748205.jpg" border="0" /></strong></a><strong>As a result of the film, St. Joseph's Adult Education Program has been approached by psychiatrists from state mental hospitals, prisons, and centers for abused women, and we are teaching Kundalini Yoga in all these various communities.
</strong>
<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Eyes-791678.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Eyes-790655.jpg" border="0" /></a>Kundalini Yoga became a life line of hope for all four women who took hold of this chance to voice their history and re-discover joy. They remembered the words to long forgotten songs and once more learned to sing.

<a href="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman-784958.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.mrsikhnet.com/uploaded_images/Woman-776443.jpg" border="0" /></a>Beautiful as Butterflies will be screened at the European Yoga Festival in France on Thursday, July 27, 2006, at an evening study group at 5:30 p.m. in the chateau. For further information and to purchase a DVD, visit <a href="http://www.stjosephsaep.co.za">www.stjosephsaep.co.za</a>. All proceeds from the film go to their non-profit organizations.

Jai Jagdeesh Kaur/Julia Landau is the director of two nonprofit organizations, St. Joseph's Adult Education Program and Footprints Educational Trust, which both provide skills training. She is also a filmmaker, a journalist, a mother of three, and a Kundalini Yoga teacher. Journey to Myself, her latest book, contains creative writing from women in prison. She was given the Sunflower Award for her work with women from marginalized communities.

AMRITSAR, INDIA -- Here, in the spiritual center of the Sikh faith, one man stands out. He appears to be a walking contradiction: he is both taller and fairer, but also much more visibly "Sikh" than almost everyone around him, even the Punjabis who have practiced the faith for generations. He is Sada Sat Simran Singh Khalsa and he is over six feet tall, with pale skin, a towering turban, ruddy beard, and floor-sweeping blue robes. As he walks the perimeter of the Golden Temple, he attracts stares from Punjabis and Westerners alike—all trying to classify him, all coming up short. India is rife with Westerners who adopt an Eastern philosophy and begin dressing and practicing like their Indian counterparts, but few are like Khalsa.

He was born and raised outside of Washington D.C, in a decidedly American community, but also in the Sikh tradition, albeit the particularly American variety of the Indian faith. At age eight, he was sent to Miri Piri Academy to study and now, on a warm spring evening some 18 years later, Khalsa can be found in the school’s music room, giving lessons to a group of young devotees.

At the Miri Piri Academy in Chhertha Sahib, outside Amritsar, India, the students faces look American, they speak in American English, and many of them have all the trappings of American youth: iPods, cell phones and reggaeton ringtones, but nobody could mistake these kids for the average American student. Neither could they be mistaken for the Indians among whom they live, pray and serve. Their white turbans are tied more elaborately, their robes are longer and their symbolic swords, kirpans, are bigger and less, well, symbolic.

In case you have been thinking about coming to Espanola, New Mexico this summer for the Summer Solstice Camp, it's not too late. It's about a month and a half away. For me the camps are always a blast! A mix of fun, spirituality, learning, processing. Already we have a cool group of Sikh youth from Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, England and other countries (in addition to the 1,200+ people that already come from around the world for the camp.). If you are interested in joining us at the camp, let me know. I have some discounts available too which might apply to you :)

I just thought I would let you know that I have setup a much better searching system on this blog. Google couldn't keep up with indexing all the pages and it was too hard to find stuff. Now when you do a search (on the left hand navigator) you will be more likely to find what you are searching for.

MP3 Audio Player
The MP3 files that I have featured are starting to pile up and the time has come for a better way to organize and make the files available. If you click on the "Audio/Video Archive" link on the left hand navigator (and then scroll down a bit) you will see a new audio player which will allow you to browse through the MP3 files I have featured on this blog in the past and also download them.

What a day. I keep trying to work on various SikhNet projects and things just keeping coming up and keeping me away from them. Lots going on in my life right now, preparing for the arrival of a new child.

I like to keep up with what is going on within the "Sikh Blogosphere" and some Sikh Discussion forums. I have to admit though I am deeply saddened when I constantly see people "throwing mud" at each other and spreading hate and ill will. It's as if we as a Sikh community have a virus that causes a person to constantly criticize, judge and say negative things about people.

What about the principles of Love, Acceptance, Tolerance, Unity, Understanding, PEACE. It's as if people have so much hate and anger inside that the only way to deal with it is to put someone down. Who wants to be a Sikh in this environment? No wonder the Sikh youth are taking off and leaving Sikhi. It's not a positive experience for them. It's all judgments for many.

Sikhi really needs to come from the heart and not the head. No one is perfect. We all go through the tests and trials of life and are going through different things. One cannot judge another. We should be there to support and help every step of the way. NO MATTER WHAT.

I have grown up with huge amounts of slander, misunderstanding and negativity towards western Sikhs in our communities and Yogi Bhajan. It's so saddening to read the things people write. It is like a gossip circle that people feed on. People just twists things and make things up. It's as if spreading this makes them feel better about themself. Are Sikhs the bullies or the protectors?

One has to accept that we as humans are all unique and different. We need to embrace this diversity and know that there is no ONE way. Just because something is right for you doesn't mean something is wrong that is different than your understanding. This is the beauty I think of Sikhi is that it is open and from the heart.

I was just reading some discussions about Khalsa Camp and Sikh Student Camp and people where just "throwing mud" and criticizing this and that about the Sikh Student Camp. Everything I read was so off and untrue. Last year I had the chance to visit England for the first time and was able to participate in both these camps. They were the same week so I split my time between the two. I had an awesome time at both the camps and both had great people involved. Each had their differences which made them unique. Ok...lets just accept that there are different ways of doing things. One may not agree with the other methods, but why the need to start fights and judge each other's methods? This only creates more anger and division within our communities.

The Internet makes it too easy for people to hide behind some anonymous name and criticize people. The next time you are considering writing something online in a discussion forum or email ask yourself if this is something you would say to the person or groups, face to face.

If we as a Sikh Community are going to survive then we HAVE to stop this. There is a way to communicate and question things in neutral way. We are all Sikh Brothers and Sisters and should really start thinking of each other that way. Let's find what we have in common and not pick at differences. Is your glass "half empty" or "half full"? Let's build bridges of understanding and acceptance so that we as Sikhs have a tomorrow. Is that too much to ask?

Some of you have probably heard about the RateMyTurban.com website. The idea behind this is to promote the Sikh Turban and make people proud of it (Men and Woman alike!). In this day an age there is so much pressure to conform to society and it can be harder to maintain our identity as Sikhs. It is important that we develop things to support youth in this challenge.

I sometimes hear from Gursikhs on SikhMatrimonials.com who feel bad because a many of the people on the website are looking for a "Non Turbaned Sikh" and are not really looking for a practicing Sikh. It makes one feel like you have to change to be accepted and fit in. This is just one of the many challenges. We even changed the whole layout, design and profile questions on the Sikh Matrimonials in an effort to promote the Sikh Identity (the turban) and support those Sikhs who choose to maintain the Sikh identity.

I remember when I was single, and in my teens/early twenties and still struggling with my identity as a Sikh. I didn't have many Sikh friends in my area and went out trying to meet people. Not much came out of that in terms of meeting the right kind of people. I always felt the pressure to dress up a certain way, try to look "sexy" and fit in. During that period I had a Girlfriend and my beard was starting to come out. I normally had my hair down in a pony tail at that time. I remember feeling subtle pressure from her about my beard and shaving. It didn't feel good. In the end things didn't work out with that girl and I later met my wife, Arjan Kaur who was a world of a difference. It was so surprising for me to meet someone who was attracted to me wearing bana and being a spiritual person. For once I didn't have to change myself to fit in and could just be myself. What a feeling that is!! What I learned from all this is that we have to be patient and not change ourselves to please society or other people. Be Yourself! If someone doesn't value who you are...then you are better off with someone else. The true friends are ones that love you and accept you for who you are without judgment and pressure. These friends can sometimes be harder to find these days, but don't give up hope. I had given up after years of searching.....and when I just let it go...and just left it up to God.... things worked out perfectly. And here I am today. So...be strong and don't shrink who you are. Shine like a light and set an example so that others feel the courage to also do so.

I got a little off my topic there. Hahaha... That's what happens sometimes when I blog. Anyways... Check out the latest draft of T-Shirt designs that Ashvinder and Me have been working on. One of the many SikhNet projects. Cool eh? The shirts are not printed yet...so you can't get them. I'm not yet sure how they will be available to people.

Ps. If you haven't already done so (and especially if you have a funky cool turban) post your picture up on RateMyTurban.com

I was just looking at our web log and I saw that Yahoo featured RateMyTurban as a "Website Pick". Check it out (at the bottom) or direct link.

I just ordered a copy since I don't have satellite TV currently or an antennae for local channels (don't have much time for TV these days. I just rent DVDs). But hey... I'm sure YOU have TV right?

Spread the word about the showings on TV and let everyone know (email this article to friends) . See the links at the bottom to find out dates and schedules for your city.

Acclaimed short film about a Sikh American family after 9/11 premieres on PBS' Independent Lens starting May 9, 2006.

American Made ( http://americanmadethemovie.com ) is a story about a Sikh American family in the aftermath of 9/11. When the Singh family's car breaks down in the desert, Ranjit tells his father that no one will stop to help because "he looks like a terrorist." What follows is the heart-rending struggle between a father and son and a larger exploration of faith, tradition, acceptance, and what it means to be 'American' today. Told with humanity and humor, American Made has won seventeen awards from film festivals around the world. It will likely be the first fictional film about Sikh Americans post-9/11 on national television. Director Sharat Raju's next project is a full-length documentary film Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath to be released in Fall 2006.

In an effort to help us all learn and understand the meaning of words used in Gurbani we are going to be featuring a random Gurbani word and the meaning on the SikhNet home page. So, every time you load the page you will learn about a new word. I myself am looking forward to this because my understanding of Gurbani words is very limited and I hope to learn more.

We have a list of about 330 frequently used words and their meaning, however we need help from someone in the sangat to type the Gurmukhi version into the list. What we are planning to display is something like this:

Gurmukhi word
Transliteration
Translation

If you are able to help please let us know and Download the list here which is in Microsoft Excel format. The Gurmukhi column shows text but it uses a font which is not common so we would like to replace it with Gurmukhi typed in the GurbaniLipi Font. Even better would be if someone could type it using Unicode. Information about setting this up is here.

If you have a list of Gurbani words and their meanings please do add to the list and send to us.

Ever since we did some improvements to our Gurdwara a few years ago I have not been broadcasting our local Gurdwara on the internet. I used to do a live audio/video broadcast for many years every Sunday. However as I started to become the family man and more busy with work it was more difficult to cover.

I've been meaning to start this back up again, but haven't gotten around to it yet because I have to figure out a way to economically setup a few permanent cameras that I can show video (or still frames that update periodically).

This morning my wife was asking me when I was going to set this up again because it is getting really hard for her to sit in Gurdwara for a long time being very pregnant. So, this was a little motivation to at least get the audio part going again. This way she can listen to ghe Gurdwara from home when she isn't feeling well, or needs to go home early to rest.

So, this message is just to let you know that Gurdwara here in Espanola will be broadcast live every Sunday (starting right now). So, if you are up and awake at the time then you can tune in and virtually be a part of our Gurdwara here.

We don't have "professional ragis" who are full time, so the Kirtan is just played by members of the Sangat who wish to do kirtan. Musicians are both young and old, western and eastern, so you'll hear a mix of styles.

Ok... it's like 1AM and it's been a long day, so I'll be somewhat brief. We have been having Khalsa Council meetings all week and this afternoon we had a special ceremony to honor the memory of Yogi Bhajan. The city of Espanola and state of New Mexico have dedicated the highway which passes in front of the home of Yogi Bhajan after him. This is a great honor and recognition for all his selfless service to the world. I don't know of any other highways in the USA which are named after a Sikh.

The New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and other guests spoke at the dedication event. Many of the New Mexico political figures have been long time friends of Yogi Bhajan (20+ years) and have great respect for him and the things that he accomplished in his lifetime.

One of the things that was cool was that originally the dedication was going to be at a different location outside, but a very unusual thing happened. IT RAINED...AND RAINED...AND RAINED. Normally when it rains you are lucky to get 2 minutes of rain. We haven't had pretty much any rain for over 6 months and the land has been soo dry. It was as if it rained for this very occasion.

Twice a year we hold "Khalsa Council" meetings which is a leadership group of Sikhs from all over the world that come to Espanola to vision for the future. We had been having these meetings and as a result of the rain the Highway memorial dedication could not be held outside. So, instead... everyone came to the Khalsa Council meetings. So the Governor and all the other New Mexico political figures came to "meet" the Khalsa Council. Cool eh?

The interviewer asks all kinds of questions relating to him coming to America and why many people became Sikhs.

During this time a large group of Sikhs (my family included) came along together on a "yatra" to Anandpur Sahib. Our group had people from all over the world and had quite an experience.

You can browse through the web journal that I put together back in 1999 for the Baisakhi celebrations in Anandpur Sahib. There are lots of interesting pictures, audio clips, videos and stories of our "Yatra" to meet with the Guru in Anandpur on Baisakhi.
